How to Care for Old and Historic Wood and Plaster What are the best methods for removing stains from wood finishes? How can you determine the type of finish on your molding? How can you repair the cracks in your plaster cornice? You've been told you have "alligatored paint": what is it and what can you do about it? . Answers to these questions and hundreds more are found in this detailed guide to caring for and reviving old wood and plaster walls and moldings. Carefully shaped woodwork, delicate plaster molding and colorful painted finishes give unique character to the interiors of old buildings. Walls and Molding describes the history of these key features and clearly explains how to save and repair them. Written for homeowners and others responsible for the care of buildings from 50 to 250 years old, and based on the principles of preservation expressed in the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation and Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings, this authoritative handbook offers practical advice for all aspects of caring for old wood and plaster walls and molding. Detailed methods are included for diagnosing, cleaning, repairing and reconstructing wood panels and molding as well as patching and replastering walls -- all stressing the three-pronged approach of the National Park Service: repair, replace and, only as a last resort, re-create. The book includes extensive charts on finishes, wood and plaster problems, and safety precautions. Combining a look at past building techniques and modern rehabilitation procedures, Walls and Molding focuses on what can be done to preserve and enjoy the special interiors in old and historic buildings. Some 300 photographs and drawings, helpful checklists, a glossary of wall treatment terms, a suggested reading list and official preservation guidelines followed nationwide provide further ideas and guidance for planning an appropriate rehabilitation in your old or historic building.

This Preservation Brief (#49) within the Preservation Briefs series produced by the U.S. National Park Service, Technical Preservation Services Division, provides a short history of decorative metal for ceiling and wall applications; outlines information on appropriate maintenance and repair work; describes methods for paint removal; and includes guidance on replacement. While focusing on "pressed" or "stamped" steel, which was and still is the most common form of decorative metal ceilings, much of the same information applies to the lesser-used zinc and copper. Back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and a product of the Industrial Revolution, these products were mass-marketed through trade catalogs, home-improvement journals, and builders' magazines, and even by Sears, Roebuck and Company. The product became available in many patterns, both plain and elaborate, and emulated the popular architectural styles of the period. It was used to repair and upgrade existing spaces as well as in new construction. A common substitute for decorative plaster and decorative woodwork, pressed metal was most widely installed as ceilings and cornices, and to a lesser extent as wainscots and wall finishes. This decorative element is seen as having a resurgence in today's society, both as a historic finish material and for new applications. Pressed-metal ceilings and walls are important, character-defining interior finishes that can be found in almost all types of historic buildings, from stores to offices and churches to factories. Understanding and copying the distinctive qualities of individual design patterns, utilizing appropriate installation techniques, and creating compatible finishes are important components of good replacement work. While maintenance and repair are always the preferred treatment, available products today enable many historic patterns to be closely matched in cases of badly deteriorated metal walls and ceilings or where missing altogether. Manufacturers of these materials, home and office contractors and construction crews, historic and registered landmark homes and property owners, architects, and some building inspectors may be interested in this Brief. Many freestanding walls have been in service for decades or even centuries and are still an attractive and practical feature of town and country landscapes. But if these walls are not well built to start with, they can fail early in their life. And if the local conditions change (e.g. the exposure is increased when neighbouring buildings are demolished or a nearby tree grows too big) a well established, soundly built wall can be damaged or can even collapse completely. Before starting on any repair, whether a minor patching up or a major rebuilding, it is important to find out what caused the problem. Failure to do that can easily lead to a recurrence. This Guide aims to help in assessing the damage in freestanding masonry walls, establishing the cause, and carrying out an effective repair. It does not cover parapets or walls built as retaining walls.
