Es de enfatizar que el esfuerzo del autor al exponer la teoría del perspectivismo y la doctrina de la complicidad social buscando la verdad política de los pueblos de Hispanoamerica es un ejercicio en el que se exploran diversos aspectos que no son los habituales para referirse a los próceres hispanoamericanos. Y hay que admitir que el estilo en lo que lo hace da como resultado un libro que quizás no sea de fácil lectura, su argumentación es densa, con enunciados a veces intrincados, por lo que pierde en didactismo en aras de un alto nivel de abstracción intelectual. Para el autor, lo endeble de la arquitectura institucional latinoamericana se hace no sólo estructural sino endémica, para cuya indagación historiologica él procede en los predios de la historiografia, sociología y filosofía; de igual modo se detiene en el fenómeno del historicismo y su relación con Francisco de Miranda desde la teoría del perspectivismo histórico, explicitando algunos problemas debatidos en la historiografía, al calor de los cuales han surgido carencias y equívocos para enjuiciar y encasillar al Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda, complejidad que el autor no rehúye sino que sale a su encuentro para reinsertarlo en una problemática hispanoamericana contemporánea en la que ha vuelto a cobrar fuerza y resonancia. En ella intenta el autor deslastrar las desvaloraciones que han alterado la comprensión cabal del pensamiento y obra de Francsico de Miranda, inscribiéndolo mas alla de las coordenadas de la Ilustración, donde ejerce con exuberancia el empuje de lo original, encarnando ciertos valores reivindicativos y programáticos como los representaron los Enciclopedistas, apuntando al mejoramiento práctico de la existencia de los pueblos, superación de la que tan urgida se hallaban las sociedades americanas, avasalladas por relaciones de subordinación y explotación donde no eran posibles las luces del progreso.

Wage-Earning Slaves is the first systematic study of coartación, a process by which slaves worked toward purchasing their freedom in installments, long recognized as a distinctive feature of certain areas under Spanish colonial rule in the nineteenth century. Focusing on Cuba, this book reveals that instead of providing a “path to manumission,” the process was often rife with obstacles that blocked slaves from achieving liberty. Claudia Varella and Manuel Barcia trace the evolution of coartación in the context of urban and rural settings, documenting the lived experiences of slaves through primary sources from many different archives. They show that slave owners grew increasingly intolerant and abusive of the process, and that the laws of coartación were not often followed in practice. The process did not become formalized as a contract between slaves and their masters until 1875, after abolition had already come. Varella and Barcia discuss how coartados did not see an improvement in their situation at this time, but essentially became wage-earning slaves as they continued serving their former owners. The exhaustive research in this volume provides valuable insight into how slaves and their masters negotiated with each other in the ever-changing economic world of nineteenth-century Cuba, where freedom was not always absolute and where abuses and corruption most often prevailed.
