« Hormis quelques hauts faits, l'histoire de la lutte pour le droit de vote des femmes au Québec nous est largement inconnue. Qui sait que des femmes votaient au Bas-Canada au début du XIXe siècle? Qui sait qu'elles ont perdu ce droit après les Rébellions de 1837-1838, pour ne le regagner que cent ans plus tard au terme d'une âpre lutte? Les autorités politiques et religieuses étaient fermement résolues à exclure les femmes de l'espace public: si celles-ci y entraient, elles délaisseraient leur rôle d'épouse et de mère, menaçant l'édification d'une société distincte, française, blanche et catholique. Non seulement il revisite cette bataille, sans oublier les femmes qui ne voulaient pas du vote, mais il s'attarde aux combats menés au nom de la liberté, de la justice et de la démocratie par divers groupes de femmes au fil du siècle, y compris par les femmes des Premières Nations. Small nations, by their very nature, raise significant questions about what a nation is. Some small nations are sovereign states with relatively small populations and limited territory, others are nations within larger sovereign states, with distinctive cultures, governance structures or other features that differentiate them from their “parent” state. By focussing on non-European nations in particular, the contributors to this volume challenge our conceptions of what a small nation is and how it operates within the international system. Since the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War in 2011, over 5.6 million people have fled Syria and another 6.6 million remain internally displaced. By January 2017, a total of 40,081 Syrians had sought refuge across Canada in the largest resettlement event the country has experienced since the Indochina refugee crisis. Breaking new ground in an effort to understand and learn from the Syrian Refugee Resettlement Initiative that Canada launched in 2015, A National Project examines the experiences of refugees, receiving communities, and a range of stakeholders who were involved in their resettlement, including sponsors, service providers, and various local and municipal agencies. The contributors, who represent a wide spectrum of disciplines, include many of Canada's leading immigration scholars and others who worked directly with refugees. Considering the policy behind the program and the geographic and demographic factors affecting it, chapters document mobilization efforts, ethical concerns, integration challenges, and varying responses to resettling Syrian refugees from coast to coast.
