As language historians we believe that the subject of our study is neither natural languages nor idiolects which speakers have always been able to develop individually (loosely what Chomsky calls L-i), but rather the social constructions of reference shared by all speakers (basically what Chomsky terms as L-e ). In this context the language historian essentially studies how a public L-e is built such that it can be understood as the language of all (i.e. hiding L-i variations) and also how L-e succeed in replacing the primary reality of idiolects, even if only in the imagination. Writing represents a crucial turning point in language construction, because it made it possible to materialize the abstraction that, until then, related speakers could only guess and besides it comes into competition with individual languages. In modern centuries, the provision of grammars, dictionaries and other such learning tools and systematizing instruments strengthens the idea that, because of their normative character, languages can be learned through study. Mythical stories encourage the achievement of prescriptive rules and lead speakers to link emotions to their language. Therefore, the topics of reflection that we want to discuss in this volume are: Norms, Myths and Emotions related to language construction.

Die vorliegende Studie analysiert anhand von Zeugnissen der Verwaltungskommunikation im spanischen Regno di Napoli regionale historische Mehrsprachigkeit auf der Basis pragmatischer Texte und widmet sich somit der Untersuchung eines hochgradig durch Sprachenpluralität gekennzeichneten Kommunikationsraums. Die anhand von überwiegend aus dem 16. Jahrhundert stammenden Beispielen erfolgende Darstellung der Sprachenwahl innerhalb der Verwaltungskommunikation wird mit Blick auf die diese prägenden Autorisierungsprozesse vorgenommen. Auf der Grundlage von zum Großteil dem Archivo General de Simancas entstammenden Materialien wird die sprachliche Gestaltung der Verwaltungskommunikation dreifach perspektiviert, wobei aus der Mehrsprachigkeit der Texte und der Kommunikationsvorgänge Erkenntnisse zur Mehrsprachigkeit der beteiligten Personen gewonnen werden, die wiederum in enger Verbindung mit den für die Sprachenpluralität feststellbaren Autorisierungsprozessen stehen.

Assumendo come campo operativo lo spazio comunicativo siciliano nei secoli XV–XVII, il presente lavoro offre un contributo assai innovativo alla storiografia delle lingue romanze. Attraverso una capillare analisi di dieci Ricettari di segreti, una tradizione discorsiva scientifico-religiosa tanto contenutisticamente, quanto linguisticamente composita ed eterogenea, si analizzano in maniera esemplare le dinamiche di contatto tra gli idiomi presenti nel Regno di Sicilia (latino, siciliano, toscano, castigliano, ecc.) sia sul piano dell’organizzazione testuale, sia sui livelli fonografematico, morfosintattico e semantico-lessicale. Quanto osservato sul piano dell’analisi testuale in merito al generarsi di varietà di contatto è messo efficacemente in relazione, sul metalivello, alle principali epistemi medioevali e della prima età moderna, a partire dalla concezione scolastico-aristotelica della variazione linguistica per giungere al dibattito rinascimentale sulla Questione della lingua. Dalla connessione dei due piani si traggono lucide conclusioni per una storia della lingua immune a ogni linea di pensiero teleologica.
