L’opera si sofferma sul trattamento riservato alla persona di età nei vari momenti della storia antica e moderna: ora oggetto di profondo ossequio, ora derisa per le limitazioni di cui soffre e disprezzata per la sopravvenuta “inutilità”. Scorrono in tal modo dinanzi al lettore i temi più vivaci e attuali della condizione senile in una società moderna che vede progressivamente dilatarsi la fascia anagrafica della terza età.
