As part of the Royal Commission's investigation of how institutions respond to child sexual abuse abuse, it will conduct case studies of selected incidents to more fully understand the institutional and systemic factors involved. This report examines the experience of women who were sexually abused as children, between 1950-1974, while committed in the Parramatta Girls' Training School and the Hay Institution for Girls, both in New South Wales. It discusses the law governing out-of-home care during that period, the harsh disciplinary conditions of the institutes, allegations of physical and sexual abuse against staff, the impact on health and employment, and the issues of reporting and redress. Both institutions closed in 1974 after a public outcry about their conditions. The case study's website also includes transcripts, opening addresses, and witness lists from the related public hearings held in Sydney from 26 February to 3 March 2014.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (2013– 17) was one of the largest public inquiries in Australian history and one of the most important investigations into child abuse internationally. It facilitated a national conversation about justice for victims and survivors and how to improve child safety in the future. Through the examination of practices in key social institutions, including churches, schools, sporting clubs, hospitals and voluntary organisations, it provided new understandings of the widespread abuse that many people had experienced in the past and it made recommendations for a national redress scheme. The Royal Commission also recommended sweeping reforms in policies, practices and institutional cultures. Offering valuable insights into the Royal Commission’s history and background, its social and cultural significance, and its implications for policy development and legislative reform, this book provides a wide-ranging analysis of the work of the Royal Commission and its social, psychological, legal and discursive impact. The chapters reveal not only the complexity of the matters that the Royal Commission was dealing with and the difficulties faced by the victims of child sexual abuse, but also the challenges of researching and writing about this sensitive topic. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Australian Studies.

As part of its contribution to the 1979 United Nations Conference on Science and Technology for Development IUNCSTD) the United Nations Institute for Training and Research jUNITAR) organized an informal research group to assess various aspects of applying science and technology to development through the United Nations system. This research group was constituted in early 1978 at the initiative of Dr. Robert S. Jordan, former Director of Research at UNITAR, and was headed by Professor Volker Rittberger, a UNITAR Special Fellow.
