For 44 years, from his arrival in Western Australia in 1846 to his death in 1990, Rosendo Salvado, Spanish Benedictine missionary, bishop and monastic leader, was a single-minded and hands-on advocate for the mission he established among the Noongar Yuet people at New Norcia in the Victoria Plains district north-east of Perth.Stefano Girola's translation of Salvado's last Report to Rome makes the missionary's assessment of five decades of work at New Norcia available in English for the first time. It sets the missionary's mature reflection alongside his Memoirs, the promotional account of the foundation of New Norcia published in 1851.Salvado's final Report to Rome ranged over widely varied tasks, physically demanding, intellectually stimulating, emotionally testing and integrated ultimately by Salvado's commitment to spiritual renewal and a sure future for New Norcia's community.

This book offers for the first time a complete English translation of Bishop Rosendo Salvado's 1883 Report to Propaganda Fide, the Roman congregation responsible for Catholic missionary work overseas. Its purpose was to give a detailed account of the Benedictine mission among the Noongar people of Western Australia, illustrated by the origins, development and present condition of New Norcia from 1844 to 1883. The Report is a primary source of great value to those interested in the history of the Benedictine mission of New Norcia, and to those with an interest in Colonial Australia and the history of multi-cultural contact between Indigenous Australians and Europeans. It is also a fascinating, first-hand account of the scandals that were being played out in the Perth Catholic diocese between 1847 and 1883, recording not only the missionary achievements, but also the setbacks and failures caused by the harsh climate, diseases, ecclesiastical politics and greed. The Report also discusses events in the wider world affecting the monastic community, such as the political and economic developments within colonial society and the introduction of new technologies. New Norcia emerges as a popular destination for visitors from Australia and overseas, including Colonial Governors, clergy from other Christian denominations, government surveyors, explorers, technicians laying the telegraph line, merchants, gold-diggers, bootleggers and Noongar people from other areas. Throughout the pages of this book, we discover the adult life of Bishop Rosendo Salvado (1814-1900), one of the most fascinating figures in the history of Colonial Australia and a missionary characterized by an extraordinary blend of idealism and pragmatism. Stefano Girola was born in Milan and now lives in Brisbane where he was awarded a PhD in Studies in Religion from the University of Queensland for his thesis on the policies and attitudes of the Catholic Church with regard to Australia's Indigenous peoples, 1885-1967. He has published widely in this area of research and in the history of Italian migration to Australia. Stefano is an Honorary Fellow at the ACU School of Theology (Brisbane) and teaches History at the University of Southern Queensland (Springfield). In 2012 he was awarded the annual Abbot Placid Spearritt Memorial Scholarship. Emeritus Professor John Neylon Molony was Head of the History Department at the Australian National University. He is the author of fourteen books. He continues to write in retirement and has just completed a study of James Cook's voyage to Eastern Australia on HMS Endeavour.

In 1846, linguistics professor Fabrice Cleriquot is despatched from Lyon to the Swan River Colony, sent away with a box full of silkworms to stop him from bringing more disgrace upon the family. Accompanying him on board the Elizabeth are twenty-eight mismatched and misguided Catholic missionaries including Dom Salvado, who seeks to create a Spanish Benedictine monastery deep in the bush, and the Irish Sisters of Mercy, who are fleeing a dreadful famine.Given the job of distributing a huge donation from a wealthy benefactress, Fabrice bears witness to the folly of his travelling companions whose presumptuous attempts to rescue the colony and the original inhabitants from themselves, can only lead to tragedy.

From Terra Nullius to Land of Opportunities and Last Frontier, the European dream has constructed and deconstructed Australia to feed its imagination of new societies. At the same time Australia has over the last two centuries forged and re-invented its own liaisons with Europe arguably to carve out its identity. From the arts to social sciences, to society itself, a complex dynamic has grown between the two continents in ways that invite study and discussion. A transnational research group has begun its collective investigation project of which this first volume is the outcome. The book is a substantial multidisciplinary collection of current research and offers critical perspectives on culture, literature and history around themes at the heart of the Imagined Australia project. The essays instigate reflection, discovery and discussion of how reciprocal imagining between Australia and Europe has articulated itself and ways and dimensions in which a relationship between communities, imagined and not, has unfolded.

A Benedictine Reader written by Hugh Feiss, OSB and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-15 with Religion categories.

A Benedictine Reader shares the treasures of the Benedictine tradition through the collaboration of a dozen scholars. It provides a broad and deep sense of the reality of Benedictine monasticism using primary sources in English translation. The texts included are drawn from many different genres and originally written in six different languages. The introduction to each of the chapters aims to situate each author and text and to make connections with other texts and studies within and outside the Reader. This second volume of A Benedictine Reader looks at Benedictine monks and nuns from many angles, as founders, reformers, missionaries, teachers, spiritual writers and guides, playwrights, scholars, and archivists. In four centuries, they went from Bavaria to North America and Africa, from England and Spain to Australia, adapting to new environments. Committed to the liturgy by their profession, they played an important role in the liturgical renewal that culminated at Vatican II. Rooted in God, church, and their surroundings, they showed remarkable resilience in the face of wars, confiscations, suppression, and exile. Their impact has been deep and stabilizing, and their story is a microcosm of the history of the church in modern times.
