Excerpt from Fifteenth Report (Second Biennial) Of the State Board of Health of the State of New Hampshire: For the Two Years Ending November 1, 1898 Herewith is presented the fifteenth report of the State Board of Health, the same being the second biennial report, for the fiscal years 1897 and 1898. It is made in accordance with the policy announced in the previous issues, to wit: that the reports should be made a source of sanitary instruc tion to the people of the state, rather than to encumber them with technical, scientific, and statistical matter, valuable only to those who are making investigations along those lines. We have, therefore, included and discussed matters of general public interest, and have endeavored to make the same as inter esting and as plain as possible. Indeed, this report contains less statistical matter than any of the former issues. Those who are especially interested in vital statistical investigations will find every available fact in the Registration Reports. A few statistics are herewith presented that serve to emphasize the need of, or the results of, preventive measures in certain diseases. The report represents only in a very small degree the actual work of the board, inasmuch as all correspondence, action in certain local cases, etc., etc., is omitted in order to give place to matter of greater public interest. Excerpt from Seventeenth Report (Fourth Biennial) Of the State Board of Health of the State of New Hampshire: For the Two Years Ending November 1, 1902 This report is intended to comprise the leading features of the work accomplished by the State Board of Health during the past biennial period, so far as the same may be properly presented in a legislative document. The first portion of the report, paged in Roman numerals, is little more than a synopsis of some subjects that have received more consider ation and required far more labor than could be here exhibited. The second part of the report, paged in Arabic numerals, represents more fully and completely the large amount of labor that has been expended at the State Laboratory of Hygiene, both in the chemical and the bacteriological departments. An especially complete report is given for the period on water analysis and the water supplies of cities and towns. A report is also made upon the effort to establish the normal chlorine lines of the state; a consideration of lead poison, and other analytical investigations. A résumé of the bacteriological investigations in suspected cases of tuberculosis, diphtheria, typhoid fever, and malaria is also given, together with a few papers and reports upon special subjects. Excerpt from Sixteenth Report (Third Beinnial) Of the State Board of Health: Of the State of New Hampshire for the Two Years Ending November 1, 1900 Probably there is no subject pertaining to the health of a community more vital than that of securing a suitable water supply and protecting it from contamination. Extensive experiments and scientific investigation within a few years have revealed the dangers to human life that are liable to occur from the use of a polluted drinking-water. It is known from sad experience that a single case of typhoid fever may infect the water supply of a city to the extent of causing hundreds of cases of this disease. Outbreaks of typhoid fever have so frequently been traced to infected drinking-water that this is now regarded as the most pro lific source of the disease. This has been the chief factor in promoting the introduction of public water supplies, not only in our cities, but also in many smaller communities of the state. Hundreds and thousands of wells formerly in use have been abandoned, and a public water supply substituted, largely in the interests of public health. Most marked results have fol lowed the introduction of these public water supplies in some of our villages, chiefly in the almost entire suppression of typhoid fever.
