Excerpt from Report on the Molybdenum Ores of Canada, 1911 Molybdenum was discovered by Scheele towards the end of the eighteenth century; but it was not isolated from its compounds until some time later. The pure metal is white in colour, and very difficult to fuse. Like iron, it takes up carbon, and the carbon-bearing alloy is more easily fused, but very much harder. Until recent years it was little in demand for industrial purposes, and very little search was made for deposits of molybdenum ores. At the present time, however, owing to its introduction into metallurgy in the form of iron-molyb denum. Alloys, there is considerable demand for such ores, which are produced only very irregularly, and in small quantities. If a larger and more regular ore supply were assured there is no doubt that new uses would be found for these alloys, and the demand for the ores would increase. The present report embodies the results of observations carried on during the field seasons of 1909 and 1910. By presenting in one report all the informa tion available regarding the molybdenum deposits in Canada, it is hoped that a new interest may be awakened in the possibilities of the Dominion as a molyb denum producing country. At present this information is much scattered; the observations were made by a large number of persons, and some of the deposits have not been examined for many years. Recently a new value was imparted to all molybdenum properties owing to the demand for ores of this metal for the manufacture of steel alloys. Deposits which had no industrial value a gener ation ago may now be regarded in a different light. The objective of the writer was, to visit and examine personally as many as convenient of the prominent molybdenum deposits in Canada. Excerpt from A General Summary of the Mineral Production of Canada During the Calendar Year 1911 The United States is the chief destination of Canada's mine exports. About 77-4 per cent having been exported to that country during the fiscal year 1910 1911, and about 15-7 per cent to Great Britain. A great variety of mineral products, chiefly in a manufactured or semi manufactured condition, are annually imported into Canada. The total value of these imports during the calendar year 1911 was as compared with imports valued at in 1910. Of the total imports in 1911, nearly in value consisted of the cruder forms of mineral products such as coal, ores of metals, diamonds unset and bort, asphaltum, alumina, clays, etc., whilst iron and steel and manufactures thereof were imported to the value of over Imports of the metals copper, gold, silver, lead, platinum, tin, and zinc; and manufactures thereof, reached a total value of over and imports of petroleum and clay products exceeded in value. The great excess of imports over exports would seem to indicate the exist ence of large opportunities for the development not only of Canada's mineral production but also of many manufacturing industries which utilize mine pro ducts as raw materials. The fact, however, must not be overlooked that the geographical situation of Canada and the United States, separated by an imagin ary barrier miles in length, evidently results, notwithstanding the tarifls on both sides, in a mutually advantageous interchange of trade. Then we find large exports as well as imports of coal and of agricultural implements. The continued large export of crude unrefined ores and metal products and the corresponding imports of refined and manufactured metal products still point to opportunities for the development of metallurgical industries as well as indus tries for the treatment, refinement, and manufacture of non-metallic products.
