The Jakarta Post was born in 1983 when Suharto s repressive New Order regime was at its height and the media was muzzled. Five rival media companies came together to start an English-language daily that some saw as an experiment doomed to fail. But the newspaper s punchy editorials, clean presentation of the news, and quirky columns and features quickly made a mark with the growing expatriate community. Over the years, the Post developed a unique editorial culture of expatriates and multicultural Indonesians. And by the time Suharto was ousted, the newspaper had earned a reputation for testing the limits of censorship and for breaking stories. Reporting Indonesia: The Jakarta Post Story traces the birth and growth of a newspaper in a developing country against the backdrop of the tumultuous events of the past 25 years in the world s fourth-largest nation. The story of The Jakarta Post illuminates conflicting themes about journalism in Indonesia while taking the reader behind the scenes to reveal the boardroom conflicts and stresses in the newsroom. It is required reading for all students of journalism and media studies, as well as anyone interested in the struggles of independent media in the developing world. About the Author Bill Tarrant has been a correspondent, bureau chief and editor for Reuters in Asia for the past 22 years. He was among a group of editors that helped start The Jakarta Post in 1983. He is currently Deputy Editor, Politics and General News, for Thomson Reuters in Asia based in Singapore. He is married with two daughters.

This book examines, through the case study of Indonesia over recent decades, how the reporting of violence can drive the escalation of violence, and how journalists can alter their reporting practices in order to have the opposite effect and promote peace. It discusses the nature of press freedom in Indonesia from 1966 onwards, considers the relationship between the press and politicians, and explores journalistse(tm) working methods. It goes on to outline in detail the communal wars in eastern Indonesia in the period 1999-2000, arguing that communication as much as physical preparations for violence were key to bringing about the wars, with journalistse(tm) rigid professional routines and newswriting conventions causing them to reproduce and enlarge the battle cries of those at war. The book concludes by advocating a "development communication" approach to journalism in transitional settings, in order to help journalists to counter the disintegrative tendencies of failing states and the communal strife that can result.

This study analyses the use of the internet to present financial and sustainability reporting by bank and LQ-45 companies listed in the Indonesian Stock Exchange. The internet disclosure index of 60 items is constructed and the index criteria are divided into four parts - content, timeliness, technology and user support. The content items divided into financial and sustainability reporting. The interesting finding is that advance of internet technology was not used by the companies to communicate financial and sustainability information to their stakeholders. There is a striking difference to the extent, to which the companies disclose their online financial and sustainability section. For example, some companies publish sustainability news releases and update their activities. In addition, many others show that not all of the firms listed in Indonesia stock exchange disclose sustainability reporting completely. However, the internet offer tremendous opportunities which are not yet fully exploited for reaching out a wide variety of stakeholders in Indonesia.

Only 35% of Indonesian listed companies disclosed any environmental information. Overall, the empirical findings have implications for both the key stakeholders and company managers. The results suggest there is demand for far more environmental disclosures. The evidence highlights that Indonesian listed companies fail to meet Indonesian stakeholders' demands by not communicating environmental information. Environmental reporting is clearly not yet a mainstream element of company reporting in Indonesia. Moreover, consistent with previous studies industry grouping and firm size are significant predictors for companies' environmental disclosure (Gray et al., 2001; Gao et al., 2005). Manufacturing and large Indonesian listed companies are more likely to communicate environmental disclosures. As there are no clear environmental guidelines, the evolved IER[subscript]w index is arguably very useful in creating a better understanding of environmental disclosures in Indonesia. This thesis provides evidence to users of annual reports, to the government and other regulatory bodies regarding the extent to which the high demand for and the low supply of environmental disclosure reveals a large expectation gap. The thesis' findings are a vital consideration in the call for mandatory environmental regulation and legislation, especially given the Indonesian critical environmental problems.

This article tries to provide preliminary study about the practice of accountability reporting in Indonesia government units. There are many studies about accountability reporting and performance measurement, but usually cover health or education units. Moreover, study about this topic in a developing country is also limited. Indonesian performance accountability reporting system uses weighting or indexing to produce a single figure of performance for eah government unit but there are the dangers of self-serving attributions and exaggerations. From this empirical study, this issue came out prominently that most government units perceived their performance as 'excellent'. The common phenomenon of self-serving attributions is self-reporting was proven to exist strongly and most units attribute it to themselves for a good performance but blame external factors for failures.
