A partir do pressuposto de que a oposição entre ciência e ensaio constituiu-se como um programa acadêmico, incorporado (em graus variáveis) por todos os agentes (instituições, grupos e indivíduos) envolvidos na formação das ciências sociais em São Paulo (1940-65); a tese sugere, não obstante, a existência de continuidades entre as duas formas de conhecimento e discurso no campo específico dos estudos sociológicos voltados a compreensão do mundo rural brasileiro. Nesse sentido, as representações dos "homens livres e pobres" do interior fixadas por Euclides da Cunha (autonomia), Oliveira Vianna (inferioridade) e Caio Prado Jr. (subordinação) são tomadas como idéias fundamentais ao desenvolvimento de uma sociologia dos problemas rurais, que incorpora tais referências em meio às tensões e disputas que marcaram o período. A tese pretende contribuir (indiretamente) ao debate atual acerca dos movimentos sociais no campo.
