Remaking The Nation written by Sarah Radcliffe and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-08-12 with Science categories.

Remaking the Nation presents new ways of thinking about the nation, nationalism and national identities. Drawing links between popular culture and indigenous movements, issues of 'race' and gender, and ideologies of national identity, the authors draw on their work in Latin America to illustrate their retheorisation of the politics of nationalism. This engaging exploration of contemporary politics in a postmodern, post new-world-order uncovers a map of future political organisation, a world of pluri-nations and ethnicised identities in the ever-changing struggle for democracy.

From the author of Urban Oracles comes Mayra Santos-Febres's Sirena Selena: somewhere between "The Blue Angel" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman" rises the legend of Sirena Selena, the diva-siren of the Caribbean whose boleros seduce and torment whoever dares listen. Discovered by Martha Divine in the backstreets of San Juan, picking over garbage, drugged out of his mind and singing boleros that transfix the listener, a fifteen year old hustler is transformed into Sirena Selena, a diva whose uncanny beauty and irrisistable voice will be their ticket to fame and fortune. Auditioning for one of the luxury hotels in the Dominican Republic, Selena casts her spell over Hugo Graubel, one of the hotel's rich investors. Graubel is a powerful man in the Republic, married with children. Silena, determined to escape the poverty and abuse s/he suffered as a child, engages Graubel in a long seduction in this mordant, intensely lyrical tragi-comedy - part masque, part cabaret - about identity (class, race, gender) and "the hunger and desire to be other things."

Reading Sites written by Patrocinio P. Schweickart and has been published by Modern Language Assn of Amer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Education categories.

Reading Sites explores how social differences condition and shape reader response. Bringing to the fore a key but long-unexplored issue, this volume extends reader-response theory and unites it with more recent discussions on the ethics of reading to consider how readers from different class, gender, racial, and ethnic positions respond to texts, authors, and other real or imagined readers. Integrating scholarship from literary studies and composition and rhetoric, Reading Sites examines a host of genres, from nineteenth-century working-class autobiographies and twentieth-century women's confessional magazines to detective fiction and book-club selections, to question how various groups of readers and authors identify with competing social hierarchies.
