Such questions are just the tip of the iceberg for how most pregnant women’s bodies are managed, surveilled, and scrutinized during pregnancy. The Reproduction of Inequality examines the intense social pressure that expectant and new mothers face when it comes to their health and body-care choices. Drawing on interviews with dozens of pregnant women and new mothers from poor, middle-class, and mixed-class backgrounds, Katherine Mason paints a vivid picture of the immense weight of expectation that comes with the early stages of motherhood. The women in Mason’s study universally sought to give their children a healthy start in life; however, their chosen approaches varied based on their socio-economic class. Whereas middle-class mothers attempted a complete lifestyle change and absolute devotion to the achievement and maintenance of “the healthy pregnant body,” poorer women made strategic choices about which health goals to prioritize on a limited budget, lacking the economic and cultural capital required to speak and perfectly adhere to the language of “good health.” The unfortunate result is that middle-class mothers are more likely to be seen by others and by themselves as “good” parents, whereas the efforts of working-class mothers are often misread as displaying inadequate concern about their health and that of their child. This in turn contributes to longstanding stereotypes about poor families and communities, and limits their children's chances for upward mobility. The Reproduction of Inequality is a compelling analysis of the impact of class on new mothers’ approaches to health and wellness, and a sobering examination of how inequality shapes mothers’ efforts to maximize their own health and that of their children.

This dissertation considers the experiences of unemployed people with unpaid labor in and around their homes in the aftermath of the Great Recession of 2008. Unemployed people perform increased amounts of cooking, cleaning, and caring labor for themselves, for their families, and for others. The experience of these practices differs for participants with different intersecting class, gender, racial identities, and different physical locations in and surrounding the Midwestern city of Columbus, Ohio, which has recently earned a reputation as a city with immense opportunities due to its engagement in race-to-the-bottom economic incentives for employers. Comparing participants’ discussions of their increased role in unpaid labor reveals that the experience is an overall positive and empowering one for participants, while it contributes to the further limitation of opportunities at job and financial advancement and personal and familial well-being. The dissertation argues that these labors not only constitute critical, unrecognized contributions to the reproduction of the current austere, neoliberal economy, but also that the effects of these labors on the individuals performing them, and the stories they tell about this performance, reproduce the inequalities that put them on different trajectories from the outset. These labors produce, reproduce, and deepen existing material and ideological inequalities in and across the working and not-working classes, particularly through the different effects of this work on participants’ relationships to time, place, and others. The dissertation concludes with proposals for strategies which could reduce the inequality-producing effects of unpaid labor during unemployment and proposes a social-reproduction political framework for resisting the current austerity-entrenched political discourse.

This book is a detailed account of how hierarchy has been maintained historically by the Nepali state, affirming the uniqueness of a caste-based social order by bringing outsiders, especially ethnic groups and religious minorities, into the caste fold. Focusing on the contemporary state of Dalits, the community that was and is put at the bottom of a very hierarchical social order in Nepal, the author argues that the traditional caste-based social order is still prevalent in the “new” Nepal even after the recent socio-political and constitutional changes. Illustrated by scientifically employed and interpreted data mainly in the three sectors of education, politics and employment, the book postulates that people who were and are born into the “high caste” still have more access to the resources and opportunities available in society in comparison with those born into the “lower” caste. It further argues that although reservation policies are in place to address social exclusion, these could not bring expected outcomes mainly due to the lack of engagement, if not ignorance, of both dominant groups and the community in the margin. The absence of clarity among political actors on the positive discrimination and affirmative actions has contributed to backtracking the recently created space in line with “inclusive Nepal”.
