The general academic progression, and particularly research engagement, of postgraduate students is characterized by various problems such as high dropout rates, longer completion times, low graduation rates, and high repetition or retake rates. This means that there are far fewer students pursuing postgraduate studies at tertiary institutions and universities than there are at the lower levels of education. Yet, there is growing demand for postgraduate education given its strong projected association with socioeconomic transformation at national and international levels among developed and developing countries alike. Postgraduate Research Engagement in Low Resource Settings sets out to garner strategies for fostering efficiency of research conduct among the students and faculty so as to enhance high quality output for the envisaged personal, societal, national, and international socioeconomic transformation. Covering a range of topics such as intellectual property, mental health, and quality assurance, this book is ideal for research supervisors, higher education faculty, librarians, educators, administrators, researchers, academicians, and students.

In our rapidly globalising world, “the global scholar” is a key concept for reimagining the roles of academics at the nexus of the global and the local. This book critically explores the implications of the concept for understanding postgraduate studies and supervision. It uses three conceptual lenses – “horizon”, “currency” and “trajectory” – to organise the thirteen chapters, concluding with a reflection on the implications of Covid-19 for postgraduate studies and supervision. Authors bring their perspectives on the global scholar from a variety of contexts, including South Africa, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Chile, Germany, Cyprus, Kenya and Israel. They explore issues around policy, research and practice, sharing a concern with the relation between the local and the global, and a passion for advancing postgraduate studies and supervision.

How The Phd Came To Britain written by Renate Simpson and has been published by Open University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1983 with Education categories.

The development of postgraduate studies and the establishment of the Ph.D. in Britain are discussed. Events leading to the introduction of the Ph.D. degree between 1917 and 1920 are traced, and Germany and America's influence on the acceptance of postgraduate education and research in Britain is addressed. An analysis of the highly developed college system peculiar to the ancient English universities is included to identify factors that delayed the introduction of the Ph.D. in Britain. Individual provincial universities are chronicled, together with Cambridge, London, Scotland, Wales, and Oxford (the first to institute the Ph.D.). In analyzing the political forces at work in the inception of the research degree, attention is directed to the vital role played by the Universities Bureau of the British Empire (predecessor of the Association of Commonwealth Universities) and the pressures exerted by government to persuade the universities to cooperate with each other in providing postgradute courses and degrees. It is concluded that the arrival of the Ph.D. at British universities symbolized the modern era of organized training in research that was conceived and nurtured in Germany and imported and commercialized by America.
