Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Sociology - Gender Studies, grade: A, language: English, abstract: The study established the effect of socio-cultural factors on the Management of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) against women in Apac District, of Uganda. The specific objectives of the study were to assess the extent to which bride price practices affects Management of Sexual and Gender Based Violence against women in Apac District; to explain the effect of cultural norms on Management of Sexual and Gender Based Violence in Apac District; and to establish the extent to which the moderating effect of the composition of LC courts affect the management of sexual and gender based violence against women. Literature on sociocultural and management of SGBV was reviewed. A case study research design was used supplemented by both qualitative and quantitative approaches. An accessible population of 320 elements was used to determine a sample size of 175 respondents. A 71% response rate was obtained. Key findings of the study include a positive significant relationship result for bride price practices (.355**), cultural norms (.580**) and composition of LC courts (.514**) on management of sexual and gender based violence. The study concluded that SGBV acts led to splitting of more families. Fewer women reported domestic violence and women beaten were psychologically tormented and rarely were men apprehended when they beat their wives. However, many community members were not aware of violence in homes. Many women eloped as a result of domestic violence and many were isolated and neglected. Fewer LC courts adhered to a predefined mechanism, many women were dissatisfied with the court set up and injustice prevailed. The study recommends that locally guidelines for payment of bride be formulated, use ceremonies such marriage and naming ceremonies to deliver SGBV information and informing communities that SGBV was punishable under the laws of Uganda. Academic Paper from the year 2010 in the subject Gender Studies, grade: B, , language: English, abstract: The main objectives of the study were to find out factors influencing women’s participation in economic activities in Uganda. Catering for both the positive and the negative factors. The positive factors such as age, education level of the women, accessibility to land, access to capital, and access to health facilities of women encouraged women to participate in economic activities. The negative factors such as illiteracy, lack of capital, men refusing their wives to work hindered women from participating in economic activities. However, despite government’s efforts to promote women emancipation and gender equality, women are still lagging behind in the participation of economic activities. It was found out that age, education, and access to land positively influenced the participation of women in economic activities. This was mainly because women who were mature in age had more responsibilities as compared to those who were young in age. Secondly, women who were educated had more knowledge and skills to enable them participate in economic activities as compared to the uneducated. Lastly, access to land increased productivity and was used as collateral to acquire credit. However, despite access to capital being one of the major factors, it negatively influenced women’s participation in economic activities since women feared these loans because of high interest rates and mis-use by their husbands. Therefore, Government should emphasize more facilitation of women’s education to enable them acquire the necessary skills that would help them participate fully in economic activities and also enable them empower the girl child who has dropped out of school to further her education.

In Idi Amin’s Shadow is a rich social history examining Ugandan women’s complex and sometimes paradoxical relationship to Amin’s military state. Based on more than one hundred interviews with women who survived the regime, as well as a wide range of primary sources, this book reveals how the violence of Amin’s militarism resulted in both opportunities and challenges for women. Some assumed positions of political power or became successful entrepreneurs, while others endured sexual assault or experienced the trauma of watching their brothers, husbands, or sons “disappeared” by the state’s security forces. In Idi Amin’s Shadow considers the crucial ways that gender informed and was informed by the ideology and practice of militarism in this period. By exploring this relationship, Alicia C. Decker offers a nuanced interpretation of Amin’s Uganda and the lives of the women who experienced and survived its violence. Each chapter begins with the story of one woman whose experience illuminates some larger theme of the book. In this way, it becomes clear that the politics of military rule were highly relevant to women and gender relations, just as the politics of gender were central to militarism.
