A fundamental change in the way energy is produced and consumed is needed to transition to a low-carbon system and tackle climate change. Research and innovation will play a crucial role in this change, as we are yet to define, develop and commercialise the next generation of clean energy technologies. The European Union is committed to the clean energy transition, and beyond setting ambitious targets and updating its policies, it funds innovations to enable EU's energy transition and lead on the global clean energy innovation market. The EU has a research and innovation strategy to accelerate the energy transition, the 2016 Communication on Accelerating Clean Energy Innovation (ACEI), which aims at creating the right business environment and trigger private investment in clean energy research and innovation. Important progress has been made in the implementation of this strategy. Between 2018 and 2020 more than EUR 2 billion in public funding is dedicated to research and innovation on key clean energy priorities for Europe, in particular to strengthening the leadership in renewables, developing affordable and integrated energy solutions, electro-mobility and a more integrated urban transport system. In addition to public funding, an essential part to accelerating clean energy innovation is the exploitation of research results, ensuring that the output of research leaves the labs to reach the market. One of the activities of the clean energy innovation strategy brings innovative solutions to the attention of investors with the aim of securing further financing for the deployment of clean energy technologies, processes and services that support the energy transition. This publication presents a collection of outstanding clean energy innovations that need support to reach full commercialisation. These innovations were funded by various EU programmes and bodies, such as the 7th framework programme for research and development, its successor Horizon 2020, LIFE+, the European Investment Bank and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).
