Resinography is a strange new word to many people. Like all scientific terms, it is a word coined for a specific purpose: to indicate (in this case) that resins, polymers, and plastics write their own history on the molecular and other structural levels. The word indicates further that anyone trained and equipped to ask the right questions (by means of instruments and techniques) will be able to read that history. That person must have sufficient training and experience to interpret the answers, of course, and he or she needs to have the temperament of a detective. But in the end, as readers of this book will discover, one is able to identify the material, to determine its history of treatment, and to learn much about its possible field of usefulness. Obviously, the resinographer seeks to do the same thing with res ins, polymers, and plastics that the metallographer does with metals and their alloys. Often the investigative techniques and the instru ments, too, are similar, but sometimes they are decidedly different. Perhaps it would be best to say that resinography and metallographyl (and petrography as well) share a common origin, and that origin is deeply rooted in microscopy. The "grandfather" of all three "ographies" was Henry Clifton Sorby (1826-1908),2 who initiated 3 metallography and petrography, and was the first to report on the microstructure of a resin (amber, a natural fossil resin).

Resinography is the graphic description of resins used to explain variations in properties or behavior with changes in composition or treatment. A characteristic graph plots changes in composition with properties and illustrates critical points with macrographs, micrographs, drawings, diffraction patterns, interference phenomena, or absorption spectra.

A principal purpose of testing materials is to correlate the results of testing with variations in manufacture. It is the role of microscopy to help all parties, in experimentation and mass production, to see what is happening. The relationship may be expressed diagrammatically, thus: In the beginning of any process of making, samples of the product are both tested and visually examined. When sufficient data on the triple relationship are gathered to make statistical sense, one factor may be deduced from the other two. For example: Seeing.--A metallurgist who has seen enough making and testing of an alloy can, within the limits of his experience, predict the metallographic appearance of a sample from his data on manufacturing conditions and physical-chemical tests. Resin technologists are gaining analogous experience in resinography. Testing.--Given the necessary manufacturing data regarding his samples, the resinographer can learn to predict, simply from his microscopical examinations, the results of test or use, with all the required statistical confidence. Making.--With competitive materials, that is, "unknown" samples, the correlation of test data and visual examination can explain the conditions which the competitor used to manufacture such a material. The necessary visual information to solve the "equations" typified above may vary from macroscopic to light microscopic and to electron microscopic. The experienced observer goes only as far as necessary to solve the problem. The following examples were chosen as typical in some resin industries.

In order to emphasize the value of point-projection X-ray microscopy for resin research, examples of data obtainable with simple equipment are presented. These data were collected from opaque, porous, and fibrous structures.

The composition of commercial, resinous materials is becoming more complex. There is considerable concern regarding the recognition of functional units in the finished product and their relation with unique physical properties. When investigating polyphase, polymeric systems, it is advantageous to start at low magnification and then proceed to higher levels of magnification, using a variety of microscopical instrumentation and related techniques. Methods which exemplify applications to the systematic study of simple and complex polymeric materials are briefly described and include the following: (1) radiography of the bulk specimen, (2) simple macroprojection of replicas of brittle-fracture surfaces, (3) ultraviolet microscopy for selective differentiation, and (4) electron microscopy for depicting fine detail in thin sections and in replicas.

Transmission phase microscopy is widely employed by resinographers to clarify the structural details of transparent, colorless resins characterized only by differing refractive indexes. On the other hand, incident phase microscopy is virtually unknown to the resinographer and has been confined primarily to the province of the metallographer. This is unfortunate since the instrumentation can supply unique and useful information for solving many resinographic problems. Illustrative problems in which incident phase microscopy was gainfully employed to obtain a solution are presented.

Nearly all systems encountered in resinography are composed of several components, many of which have differentiating absorption spectra in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum. Ultraviolet microscopy provides the only direct means of studying the physical distribution of ultraviolet absorptive components in nonabsorptive or relatively low absorptive materials. Some chemical reactions can also be investigated with this instrumentation to obtain knowledge of the rates of formation or decomposition, diffusion characteristics, by-products formed, and so forth. This paper contains brief reviews of some problems that illustrate the unique and significant information concerning resinographic systems that can be obtained through the use of ultraviolet microscopical techniques.
