Model tests were conducted at 1:36-scale ratios in restricted, shoal, and nonrestricted straight channels to investigate channel effects on resistance of barge tows. The restricted channel widths varied from 125 to 300 ft with 1-on-2 side slopes, the shoal channels were 540 ft wide with vertical slopes; depths in both channels varied from 6.5 to 30 ft. The nonrestricted channels were 792 ft wide by 342 ft deep. Seven different sizes and shapes of barges were tested in flotillas of one to eight similar barges loaded to the same draft. Some of the tests simulated field tests. Comparisons of model and prototype data indicate speeds predicted from model tests conformed generally with those observed in field tests. Relations were developed for shoal and restricted channels to indicate relative effects of channel dimensions on flotilla performance. An equation was developed to evaluate flotilla performance in deep water. (Author).

A field investigation of icebreaking by the motor vessel Renee G, operating on the Mississippi River between Alton, IL, and Fort Madison, IA, is reported. The operation encountered a wide variety of ice conditions and was performed with a variety of barge configurations and arrangements. Important qualitative observations of the nature and difficulties encountered while icebreaking were made; and, by instrumenting the propeller shafts and using load cells between the towboat and the barges, quantitative information was obtained on the resistance encountered while icebreaking. Also described are the effects of repeated passage through an ice cover, navigation procedures peculiar to icebreaking, and minor damage sustained by the towboat. (Author).
