Is love the most revolutionary of all acts? In this wide-ranging collection of twelve short stories, a startling array of characters explore their perspectives on love. The stories sweep from sharp realism to heady allegory, haunting fables to sci-fi thrillers, starring teens and drifting husbands, futuristic automatons and talking dogs, gardeners and gatekeepers, a blind girl, a young father, and many more. In "Calamity Jane," see love through the eyes of teenage boys obsessed with the calamitous girl of the title; revisit the famous Greek love story in "Orpheus and Eurydice"; Dan's mechanical automaton seems to be his truest friend in the harshly conformist world of "Automatonomatopoeia"; a Crimean revolutionary gets waylaid at a mysterious gate in "The Invitation"; on a construction site in Yugoslavia, a young man tries to come to grips with unconventional fatherhood in "Vikings"; and in "The Conversation", a blind woman manages her relationship with a hectoring mother while finding other types of love. These are just a few of the tales in Resistance, Revolution and Other Love Stories. Anyone interested in the struggle against stifling societal powers and the potency of love will see some of themselves in these pages. By turns exciting, meditative, and funny, these enjoyable, thought-provoking stories will linger long after the book is closed. Let the revolution begin!...

A Romantic Love Story During the American Revolutionary War: The sound of hoofs alerted him that they were close by. Benjamin was weak but he summoned up strength to run, there was no way they would get him. Too much was at stake. He paused to take a breath when he could no longer hear the sounds. He knew they were still around and it was a trap to see if he would come out. He was not that stupid. Silently he made his way pass the cloth lines, looking out for danger. He stopped when he heard a sound, his heart pounded faster. He knew what would happen if he was caught; they would interrogate him with drastic measures before killing him. He suddenly stepped back when he collided with a body. That moment a thought occurred; a means of getting rid of the British. Without thinking twice, he grabbed the young lady and kissed her. He was stunned when he met soft lips. It had been a cover to divert their attention but he enjoyed it. He ignored her slaps on his chest and continued kissing her deeply, savoring her taste. He could barely see her face but he knew she was soft all over. "Stop fighting." He warned aggressively, the last thing he wanted was for her to make the soldiers believe otherwise. "He's no where in sight." A voice yelled a few inches from them. There were a few mumblings and Benjamin relaxed when he heard the horses go away. A slap greeted him catching him unaware. "You bastard!!" yelled a soft voice matching the mouth he had kissed. A piercing pain seared through him, he clutched his stomach and bent over, he cursed as he swam into unconsciousness. *** Ashley stared at the body on the ground, what in heavens name was going on? What was she to do? She didn't even know him. She blushed when she remembered the kiss, how dare him? She had been scared out of her skin when she had been grabbed by a stranger. If only she had not gone to see the late night play. She knew he was trouble, he was being looked for, that much she knew. The best thing was to leave him here or call the soldiers attention to him. Those thoughts were shoved aside when she knelt by him, a wound by his lower side was gushing blood. She could not let him die, she shuddered when she thought of what they were going to do to him. Burn him, and make him an example for other patriots, she could not let his death be on her. There was no way she could carry him, he weighed a ton. So she dragged him. She was glad no one was awake, there would be no explanation she could give. Quietly she dragged him up the stairs and into the attic which was her room. She sighed in relief when she finally got him on the bed. With the burning lantern she was now able to look at him. Bloody hell!! He was handsome. His dark hair was long and fell over well shaped eyes with long lashes. His face was well chiseled with cheekbones. His lips were firm that much she knew and he spotted a beard. She wondered what a fine man like him was doing with the resistance. His groans brought her back to reality and she grabbed a pillow which she placed over his mouth to keep him quiet. She grabbed a first aid kit and brought out a few supplies. Her hands hesitantly hovered over his cotton shirt, with a sigh she lifted it up and found herself smiling. Not only was he handsome but had a beautiful body. She frowned when she saw the wound, someone had done a bad knife job on him. Thankfully, she grew up with four brothers who were rascals and loved fighting, she always attended to them when they got injured in drunk brawls at the tavern. She grabbed the whiskey and poured it on the wound to sterilize it, she cleaned it and rubbed a disinfected wool over a needle.

This book is an engagingly written critical genealogy of the idea of "love" in modern Chinese literature, thought, and popular culture. It examines a wide range of texts, including literary, historical, philosophical, anthropological, and popular cultural genres from the late imperial period to the beginning of the socialist era. It traces the process by which love became an all-pervasive subject of representation and discourse, as well as a common language in which modern notions of self, gender, family, sexuality, and nation were imagined and contested. Winner of the Association for Asian Studies 2009 Joseph Levenson Book Prize for the best English-language academic book on post-1900 China

Revolution Plus Love written by Liu Jianmei and has been published by University of Hawaii Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-09-30 with History categories.

In the aftermath of the May Fourth movement, a growing expectation of revolution raised important intellectual issues about the position of the individual within a society in turmoil and the shifting boundaries of political and sexual identities. The theme of "revolution plus love," a literary response to the widespread insurrections and upheaval, was first popularized in the late 1920s. In her examination of this popular but understudied literary formula, Liu Jianmei argues that revolution and love are culturally variable entities, their interplay a complex and constantly changing literary practice that is socially and historically determined. Liu looks at the formulary writing of "revolution plus love" from the 1930s to the 1970s as a case study of literary politics. Favored by leftist writers during the early period of revolutionary literature, it continued to influence mainstream Chinese literature up to the 1970s. By drawing a historical picture of the articulation and rearticulation of this theme, Liu shows how changes in revolutionary discourse force unpredictable representations of gender rules and power relations, and how women's bodies reveal the complex interactions between political representation and gender roles. Revolution Plus Love is a nuanced and carefully considered work on gender and modernity in China, unmatched in its broad use of literary resources. It will be of considerable interest to scholars and students of modern Chinese literature, women’s studies, cultural studies, and comparative literature.
