Il tema dei beni culturali sottratti illecitamente ai loro contesti originari anima da decenni il dibattito globale. E ha acquistato nuovo slancio da quando l’opinione pubblica ha puntato i riflettori su prestigiose collezioni occidentali in cui sono custoditi tesori provenienti da paesi che oggi ne rivendicano la proprietà. Alexander Herman ci offre una panoramica ampia e aggiornata dei casi più controversi, come la querelle intorno ai marmi del Partenone o il parziale rimpatrio dei bronzi del Benin, passando per gli oggetti trafugati dal Palazzo d’Estate di Pechino e i dipinti requisiti dai nazisti. Quella della restituzione, però, è una faccenda più complessa di quel che appare, non solo perché obbliga a fare i conti con i soprusi degli antenati, ma anche perché applicare un’idea contemporanea di giustizia a istanze del passato può avere un costo imprevisto. Se oggi risulta inaccettabile che i simboli di un culto religioso strappati alle comunità indigene facciano bella mostra di sé nei musei dei “predatori”, in molti casi si tratta di manufatti entrati a far parte di quelle collezioni da secoli; alcuni hanno assunto un enorme valore culturale e perfino finanziario per le istituzioni che li ospitano, le quali potrebbero non essere disposte a rinunciarvi. Nell’indagare in che modo sia possibile negoziare le riconsegne, questo saggio si interroga anche sul paradigma stesso in cui siamo entrati: l’assillo di fare ammenda delle ingiustizie del passato potrebbe avere un impatto irreversibile sul settore culturale per gli anni a venire.
