This guide is specifically designed to be used in a church environment with support groups. It offers the teacher practical and biblical guidance in an easy to follow format. As you lead your participants through this study, encouraged them to look to Christ for the power they will need to overcome. Through this 12 week Study Guide you will learn the following:WEEK 1 – UNDERSTANDING WHERE WE CAME FROM Pain from the past, if not healed, will carry forward and direct how we live and view life. Dragging around excess baggage is not productive to living a healthy life. Understanding the sins of our ancestors can help us see what we are repeating from those that lived before us. WEEK 2 – GOD'S DESIGN FOR FAMILY – PART 1Understanding God's design for the family helps us to see where our family of origin went wrong and what they did right. God is both separate and belonging at the same time. While man is more separate and woman more belonging, when they come together, God is best reflected. WEEK 3 – GOD'S DESIGN FOR FAMILY – PART 2The best picture of the image of God is reflected in covenant of marriage. This week we will look at the differences between the sexes. There are primary needs created in each sex that is determined by the hormones God gave to each gender. When we learn to become emotionally healthy ourselves, we can then pick a healthy mate. WEEK 4 – GOD'S DESIGN FOR FAMILY – PART 3This week we will look more closely at the dynamic of a healthy home. Family health is not something that you discover, it is something that must be developed. We will also learn how a parent should model appropriately for the same sex child and what happens when wrong modeling happens. WEEK 5 – PATHOLOGY OF THE DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILYLots of pathology takes place in a dysfunctional family. Attention gets focused on the emotionally needy person. Limits get placed on expression of feelings and talk about family secrets or problems is discouraged. Identifying dysfunction in your family will allow you to get more in touch with your feelings and overcome the loss of your childhood.WEEK 6 – HEALING PAINFUL MEMORIESThe passing of time doesn't mean healing will happen. In-fact a painful memory left un-dealt with can cause the pain to increase. The weight of painful memories can take a toll on you emotionally and physically. WEEK 7 – BATTLEFIELD OF THE MINDTo overcome any unwanted behavior, your greatest battle will be fought in your thinking. The mind retains its memories with the original emotions attached until rewiring takes place. The messages we decide to believe can become our core beliefs. Core beliefs are thoughts that have been so hard wired into us that we live our life by them. WEEK 8 – LIES WE BELIEVE ABOUT OURSELVESThere are some specific lies that we believe about ourselves that are common to many. Most of the emotional struggles, relationship difficulties, and spiritual setbacks are caused by the lies we tell ourselves.WEEK 9 – LIES WE BELIEVE ABOUT GODEverything in our spiritual life depends upon the sort of God we worship. If we have wrong thinking about God, we will have wrong thinking about everything else.WEEK 10 – LIES THAT COME FROM THE WORLD AROUND USMost messages we hear on a daily basis are not productive and add no value to our life. Some messages in fact are destructive.WEEK 11 – FINDING YOUR IDENTITY AND VALUEYour identity isn't in your name or in what you do. To have lasting self-worth, you must put your identity in Jesus Christ and not in other things. WEEK 12 – FORGIVENESS AND RESTITUTIONForgiveness is not for the other person, it is to bring you freedom from the weight it brings. Asking others for forgiveness and making restitution is part of God's path in restoration.

This guide is specifically designed to be used in a church environment with support groups. It offers the teacher practical and biblical guidance in an easy to follow format. As you lead your participants through this study, encouraged them to look to Christ for the power they will need to overcome. Through this 13 week Study Guide participants will learn the following: WEEK 1 - INTRODUCTION TO THE PROGRAM Programs can't heal people but Jesus can. Everyone's journey is going to be different and will take a different amount of time. WEEK 2 - GOD'S PLAN IS RESTORATION We start in Genesis to show God's plan of restoration. Through this we see what man was like before sin entered the world, after the fall and how God plans to restore us. WEEK 3 - OVERCOMING DENIAL WITH GOD'S HELP We like to think we can handle things on our own. When we can't, we begin to place the blame on others. This lesson teaches us how to own our behavior and take responsibility for it. We can't live in denial and Jesus has the power to help us learn to live with responsibility WEEK 4 - LEARNING TO TRUST GOD The picture of God we each have will often look like our most dominant parental figure. That picture of God is almost always incorrect. This week we examine who God really is by looking at His character. We will then determine if it makes Him trustworthy enough to place our faith in. WEEK 5 - MAKING A COMMITMENT TO CHANGE Change most often happens when we hurt too much to stay the way we are. Change takes a strong commitment. We will explore what a commitment to God and ourselves looks like. WEEK 6 - THE TRUTH ABOUT DEPENDENCY Dependency is usually looked at as negative. We will look at dependency in a more constructive light because it's not always a bad thing. Dependency on God is a good thing. WEEK 7 - COMPULSIVE BEHAVIOR Dependency on the wrong things happens when we decide not to depend on God. The wrong kind of dependency often turns into compulsive behaviors. Looking at the characteristics of compulsive behavior helps us identify compulsion in our own life and seek to overcome it. WEEK 8 - THE CHEMISTRY OF COMPULSIVE BEHAVIOR This week is all about the chemistry in our body that helps to cause us to become compulsive with a behavior. WEEK 9 - OBSTACLES AND BOUNDARIES We all have obstacles to overcome in life. Learning how to put boundaries in our life is important. Boundaries give us respect for ourselves and communicate our worth to others. WEEK 10 - SHAME, GOOD OR BAD? We each have a standard in our mind of what we believe to be normal behavior. When we don't feel we are at that standard we consider ourselves "not normal." That feeling of being unacceptable communicates a message that we should feel ashamed. Although, everyone experiences shame, we will look at what living a shame based life can do to a person. WEEK 11 - LOOKING FOR A SCAPEGOAT Shame teaches us to feel bad about ourselves and to look for someone else to blame. We transfer our shame to others in many different ways. God knew we would struggle with shame and gave us a way to deal with it. WEEK 12 - REPLACING SHAME WITH HONOR This week is all about riding ourselves of shame the way God does ....by replacing it with great honor. WEEK 13 - FINDING THE BLESSING A blessing is the message that you are somebody. That you are special, needed and wanted. It's the message that you have great value. We each look to our parents to tell us that we are okay; we are important and have worth. When the blessing isn't given to us by our parents, we will look for it elsewhere. We will look for approval from a boyfriend/girlfriend, spouse, employer, teacher, friend, etc. This week we will learn to look to God for the blessing we missed.
