This dissertation is written to bring the insights from the theological anthropology and social ethics of Dorothy L. Sayers into dialogue with Catholic Social Thought (CST) in order to address the challenge feminism presents to CST. Dorothy L. Sayers is a writer whose works shows a fresh perspective on work and gender, and seems to offer a new way to understand human beings and their work. CST, the branch of moral theology concerned with human life in the social, political and economic realms, has accepted, uncritically, the public sphere-male/private sphere-female split. Sayers is the major voice and source. Her analogy of the Trinity, and the Trinitarian anthropology which arises from it, expands the scope of present day Roman Catholic systematic theology and theological anthropology. The conception of work she gives is shown to be practical as of use in explicating an underlying theme of the social encyclicals. Using Sayers uncovers resources within the natural law of tradition of CST which can expand that tradition and free it from its dependence on the gender stereotypes of Western industrial society. MacIntyre provides methodological framework and content. His account of epistemological crisis frames the question; his concepts of translation and traditions of rationality allow us to read Sayers' work as consistent with Catholic Social Teaching's natural law ethics. His account of narrative and the novelist as moral philosopher allows us to evaluate Sayers' most popular writings, her detective fiction, as moral fiction. His account of practices, especially his account the virtyes of acknowledged dependency complete a theology of work by giving an account of the work of care which is human, and not gender stereotyped. Reading Sayers and MacIntyre together results in a theology of work which can account for the work of care without relying on gender stereotypes. This begins to resolve the epistemological crisis in CST.

Many colleges and universities have begun using the language of vocation and calling to help undergraduates think about the future direction of their lives. This language is used in both secular and religious contexts, but it has deep roots in the Christian theological tradition. Given the increasingly multi-faith context of undergraduate life, many have asked whether this terminology can truly serve as a new vocabulary for higher education. If vocation is to find a foothold in the contemporary context, it will need to be re-examined, re-thought, and re-written; in short, higher education will need to undertake the project of hearing vocation differently. In this third volume on vocation from editor David S. Cunningham, the thirteen contributing scholars identify with a wide variety of religious traditions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism. Some contributors identify with more than one of these; others would claim none of them. The authors met on multiple occasions to read common texts, to discuss agreements and differences, and to respond to one another's writing; some of these responses are included at the end of each chapter. Both individually and collectively, these contributors expand the range of vocational reflection and discernment well beyond its traditional Christian origins. The authors observe that all undergraduate students--regardless of their academic field, religious background, or demographic identity-need to make space for reflection, to overcome obstacles to discernment, and to consider the significance of their own narratives, beliefs, and practices. This, in turn, will require college campuses to re-imagine their curricular and co-curricular programming in order to support their students's reflection on issues of meaning, purpose, and identity.
