We know that reading is an important part of life, and a necessary activity for our growth and development in any area. If you''ve sought out even the tiniest bit of personal development material, you''ve had it hammered into you over and over how important it is to read; to get into someone else''s head and learn from them so that you may transform yourself in some way. But how long do those ideas stick with you? How long do those transformations really last? The difference between getting the full value out of the time you spend reading and getting the results you really want, and simply flipping through pages, is in your application and retention of the material. These are the two key ideas supporting the purpose of this eBook, which is to give you the skills necessary to bring about lasting positive change and get the results from your reading that you''re looking for. The following strategies have proven to be successful in helping people apply and retain the material they read, in a way that helps them get the results they want. So set aside that book you''re currently reading and don''t pick it back up until you finish this one! Consider this the prerequisite to any development or how-to books you read from now on.I wrote this eBook because first and foremost it took me years to get to the point where I really enjoyed reading and was able to consistently get the results I was looking to get out of the books I read. Also, the good news here is that you are already a reader! So many people choose to limit themselves based on an old negative feeling they associate with the process of reading. Whether that feeling stems from their high school mythology class, or from their third grade teacher only reading them sad dog books, they are seriously missing out on an opportunity they could be using to transform some area of their life. Maybe you''ve been in that boat for a while now and you''re ready to disembark, or maybe you''re just tired of not seeing any results from the hours you''ve spent reading those development and how-to books that everyone says are so important. Either way you''re in the right place, because as I''m sure you''ve heard before, your time is far more valuable than your money; you can always get more money (especially if you read, and especially if you read in a way that is designed to get you results), you can''t really get more time.So I''m not saying you have to spend any more time reading than you already are, just that you should help yourself out and learn how to get the most out of that time. This eBook walks you through how to do this. Let''s say you spend even just 20 minutes each day reading into some area you want to improve in, and you''re relying solely on the hope that your memory will recall that info and magically bring it back to serve you later. The annoying part about doing this is that our minds just naturally forget things. Especially if those things aren''t things we see repeatedly, or if those things are unfamiliar to us. It''s like watching a video of someone working through an algebraic geometry problem once and expecting to remember each step they took to solve it. In the coming pages you''ll discover how to combat this and why it''s so important to not trust only our mind to put information into action after looking over something one time. The bottom line is that if you aren''t even remembering what you read in those 20 minutes, you can probably imagine you''ll have trouble applying and retaining that material, and ultimately you''ll struggle to get the results you''re after. I know that when I use the strategies described here to apply and retain what I''m reading, I''m not just wasting my time looking at words on a page. I''m really setting myself up to integrate something useful into my life; I''m absorbing the material in a way that lets me successfully apply it to whatever area I''m focused on developing at that time, to make me better in that area, right now and for years to come.

Teaching Reading written by Barbara M. Taylor and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-04-11 with Education categories.

This unique book tells the story of a select group of schools and teachers who have managed to beat the odds in terms of improving elementary students reading achievement. Originating with the CIERA School Change Project directed by Barbara Taylor and David Pearson, it was subsequently expanded to include the work of other research teams doing similar work. It combines large scale studies of effective schools and teachers (Part I) with case studies of individual schools and teachers who have successfully transformed research findings into situation-specific strategies appropriate to their schools and classrooms (Parts II and III). The book's distinct contribution is showing that no matter how consistent the research findings on effective school and classroom practice, groups of teachers must improvise their own situation-specific programs and practices. In short, they must be able to create variations on a common theme. Key features of this outstanding new volume include: *Integration of research and cases--One cannot fully understand research-based general principles without knowing how they play themselves out in specific settings. Similarly, one cannot fully understand cases without seeing the commonalities across different schools and classrooms sharing similar goals. This book provides both perspectives. *Diverse cases--The schools and classrooms depicted in this book are urban, rural, and suburban; poor and middle class; and English-only and bilingual. Rather than telling readers how to beat the odds, it provides them with a wide variety of cases from which they can extrapolate to build their own customized teaching programs and practices. *Summarizing section--The final section contains a summary of research on effective schools and teachers and a concluding chapter by Gerry Duffy and Jim Hoffman in which they reflect on the book's content and possible directions for future research. The book is targeted to both in-service elementary teachers and literacy students in advanced college courses.

The Results Fieldbook written by Michael J. Schmoker and has been published by ASCD this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Education categories.

What is the single, most important event of the school year that affects school improvement? How do you measure school improvement? How can simple tools--already at your fingertips--work more effectively to improve student achievement in reading, math, and more? The Results Fieldbook answers these questions and describes in abundant, practical detail how five school systems overcame obstacles and achieved exceptional results for all their students. These schools focused on the proven core concepts that Mike Schmoker described in both editions of his first ASCD book, Results: The Key to Continuous School Improvement. Supplementing the five case studies, brief vignettes written by practitioners show how core practices--teamwork, the use of achievement data, and planning for measurable goals--made an immediate and profound difference in student learning at their respective schools. A close look at these school systems reveals the simplicity of school improvement efforts built around the still-overlooked and most potent force in improvement--collective, organized teacher intelligence. This book contains easily adapted processes and refinements that result from such teacher collaboration and all but guarantee measurable improvement. Tables, figures, and appendixes illustrate effective data-collection processes; and at the conclusion, a three-part synthesis of the best of these systems provides practical steps toward implementing this radically more effective approach to school improvement, starting with preservice education.
