En los tres primeros cap?tulos que hemos resumido de su obra, Almond y Powell desarrollan diversos temas esenciales de la Ciencia Pol?tica, entre ellos la teor?a de los sistemas pol?ticos y la estructura y cultura pol?tica. Hasta 1950, la pol?tica comparada era: parroquialista (se limitaba a Europa), configurativa (analizaba aspectos peculiares y no hac?a un an?lisis sistem?tico), formalista (estudiaba instituciones, leyes e ideolog?as, pero no ejecuci?n interacci?n y conductas pol?ticas), exitista (inevitabilidad de la democracia, siendo el autoritarismo una "patolog?a"). Pero varios factores (explosi?n nacionalista en Oriente y Africa, con la aparici?n de culturas distintas e instituciones, p?rdida de la hegemon?a occidental, auge del stalinismo) van a provocar cambios: abandono del parroquialismo y el etnocentrismo (se pasa a estudiar gobiernos no occidentales y sistemas pol?ticos del pasado), an?lisis pol?ticos que no se quedan en lo formal: conductismo, m?s precisi?n, matematizaci?n, nuevos conceptos (cultura, rol y socializaci?n pol?tica), Hasta los siglos XVII y XVIII, predomin? la teor?a funcionalista basada en la interacci?n de tres instituciones: poderes ejecutivos, legislativo y judicial, con un sistema de frenos y equilibrios. Pero luego aparecen los partidos pol?ticos de masas, el sufragio universal, grupos de inter?s, etc., aparecen nuevas funciones pol?ticas: articulaci?n de intereses, combinaci?n de intereses y comunicaci?n. Almond y Powell siguen el modelo funcionalista, mecanicista y biologicista, pero le a?aden el modelo estructural-funcionalista y la teor?a general de sistemas (en un sentido din?mico y no est?tico).
