Excerpt from Retail Store Management According to the census of 1910, there were in the United States 1,195,029 retail dealers. In addition to this great number of people engaged in conducting stores of one kind or another, there were enumerated 921,130 salespeople and 387,183 clerks in stores. But to get an idea of the total number of people employed in the retail business in this country there should be added to the above the number of deliverymen, laborers, stockroom workers, porters, janitors, cleaners, engineers, carpenters, display men, advertising men, floor managers, bookkeepers, and so on. It is safe to say that there are now more than 3,000,000 people employed in the retail trade. Not an insignificant number! In a comparison of the retail group with other industrial groups of workers, it will be found that farmers and farm laborers are the only classes that exceed retailers and retail employees. No single line of manufacture approaches this total. The number of people employed in the transportation of goods also falls short of this number. Yet those facts seem hardly to have been realized by anyone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Emerging Approaches to Retail Outlet Management In many industries, products are offered to consumers through company controlled retail outlets. Some examples are supermarket chains, gaso line, banks, and fast foods, where the outlets are supermarkets, service stations, branch banks and franchised restaurants respectively. As in other industries, the problems of retail outlet management can be classified into three groups strategic planning, tactical decisions and operational control. The strategic planning questions are How many outlets should be built in the next Y years? In what cities (markets) should they be built? When? The tactical decisions concern the selection of specific sites What is the potential of a specific site? What is the impact of changes in the environment on site potential, e.g. Construction of a motel on gas station sales? What is the impact of an outlet on a neighboring outlet? As you are reading this, you are obviously interested in how Marketing actually works and what is actually effective. You already have been through the wringer with all these online marketers who use the same copy-paste template of a sales page, with mailing lists which send you unwanted traffic several times a week and insist that you are stupid enough to believe their hype, over and over and over. The Masters of Marketing Secrets series brings you these classics so that you can make up your own mind. All that has been done with these books is to give you modern versions of them which have been (mostly) cleaned up of typo's and poor editing - and also made available in ebook and paperback so you can study them at your leisure. J. George Frederick lived in those times and wrote about the people and principles of advertising they discovered. His book has been handed around for years, and as you study the other books in this series it starts pulling the pieces together for you.
