El libro reúne 12 años de ensayística personal, partiendo del trabajo presentado en en concurso nacional de ensayos sobre la educación convocado por el Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económica (CIDE) en el año 2000: La penumbra de la educación nacional o breve ensayo de su realidad. Acercándose a temas reflexivos de la cultura, la estética y el pensamiento, con un toque vinculado a la historia y una perspectiva humanística, el libro compendia 5 apartados donde quedan patentes las huellas, las piezas, los fragmentos y porciones de un itinerario de lecturas, escuelas, autores, vivencias, ausencias, homenajes, creando una cosmovisión personal, desde el arte del ensayo crítico, literario, académico o libre. El libro consta de 5 apartados: retazos primeros, donde se ejercitan los primeros pasos que dan fisonomía y carácter, exploración y estructura, a las pesquisas e inquietudes que hilvanan y vertebran el tono general del resto del volumén; retazos de crítica literaria, donde figuran trabajos sobre poesía, narrativa, cine, que contrastan un ejercicio de lectura y comentario literario con una afición al testimonio y los vestigios de escuelas y autores, representantes de una configuración intelectual, estética y reflexiva del arte verbal y la difusión de autores como Giuseppe Ungaretti o Rosa Montero; retazos de homenajes, incluye dos ensayos, el primero solemne, el segundo irreverente, hiriente, ambos en un tono testimonial, auto-referencial, mostrando momentos vitales y un horizonte de formas culturales, en el primer caso relativos a la vejez y en el segundo respecto a las atrocidades vividadas por un joven mexicano extraviado en la narcotización de la vida; la sección de retazos libres, expone lanteamientos reflexivos de distintos temas y con un tono mucho más espontáneo, sin la atadura de la verificación y con el esfuerzo por pensar y reflexionar situaciones y problemas del presente; finalmente, la sección de retazos extras, añadidos y amorfos, da píe a trabajos donde se constata un ejercicio combinatorio, abarcando temas tratados con rigor académico, artículos de opinión, ensayos libres, todos mostrando los paramétros de la construcción de un personalidad literaria y un aliento propio, que transita por indagar en el pensamiento de Marx y el realismo, ahondar en el nihilismo, como pensar en la presencia de zoológicos virtuales o en cierta actitud burguesa, sin descartar la confrontación con una cercanía al discurso antropológico del cuerpo desde la irrevencia y una postura suscetible de llamarse absurdo académico, hasta presentar el valor de la escritura o la semblanza de una autohistoria en vías de inscribir a Pardo Urías en una tradición literaria e intelectual mexicana.

Entonces, aparece el fantasma de la vida, que nos dicta al oído el recuerdo vivo de aquellas ausencias, y de ese modo, podemos plasmar los "RETAZOS" que lejanos reaparecen, para hacernos llorar, para hacernos vibrar y para que volquemos la enseñanza del amor y del dolor y la repartamos entre la gente, a modo de enseñanza. En consecuencia, podremos comprender, que también con el paso de los años, aprendemos otra forma de vivir, que es la de dar..., dar amor, comprensión, contención a aquellos seres que lo necesitan, y así vivir en paz con nuestro propio silencio. Este libro se lo dedico a las personas más importantes que atravesaron mi vida y que hicieron posible esto que estoy haciendo, al Doctor Don Aníbal Ferrer y para Don Emilio Pérez Delgado, mi agradecimiento, por su ayuda incondicional.
