The God you think exists does not exist. By examining science, philosophy, and the Bible, Steve Baldwin reveals the existence of a God that is radically different than most have understood. He demonstrates how we lack a consistent definition for "God" and the result is often a God we see as too insignificant for our lives, too distant for relationship and having little relevance to our daily realities. By proposing a new understanding of the name of God, Steve uncovers a God that really does exist and bridges the widening gap between faith and science: "What if we are looking at two sides of the same coin? What if billions, if not infinite, combinations played out together to 'accidentally' create over a length of time an ordered universe with intelligent creatures, reflecting the very natural laws and character of its intelligent, creative, and I daresay even loving source - existence?"The universe is telling stories. The question is, why?

Rethinking God As Gift written by Robyn Horner and has been published by Fordham Univ Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-08-25 with Philosophy categories.

Rethinking God as Gift is situated at the intersection of philosophy, critical theory and theology. The first sustained study of the work of Jean-Luc Marion in English, it offers a unique perspective on contemporary questions and their theological relevance. Taking its point of departure from the problem of the gift as articulated by Jacques Derrida, who argues that the conditions of possibility of the gift are also its conditions of impossibility, Horner pursues a series of questions concerning the nature of thought, the viability of phenomenology, and, most urgently, the possibility of grace. For Marion, phenomenology, as the thought of the given, offers a path for philosophy to proceed without being implicated in metaphysics. His retrieval of several important insights of Edmund Husserl, along with his reading of Martin Heidegger and Emmanuel Lévinas, enables him to work out a phenomenology where even “impossible” phenomena such as revelation and the gift might be examined. In this important confrontation between Marion and Derrida issues vital to the negotiation of postmodern concerns in philosophy and theology emerge with vigour. The careful elucidation of those issues in an interdisciplinary context, and the snapshot it provides of the state of contemporary debate, make Rethinking God as Gift an important contribution to theological and philosophical discussion.

“A highly personal, richly informed and culturally wide-ranging meditation on the loss of meaning in our times and on pathways to rediscovering it.” —Gabor Maté, MD, author of In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction A neuroanthropologist maps out a revolutionary new practice—Hedonic Engineering—that combines the best of neuroscience and optimal psychology. It’s an intensive program of breathing, movement, and sexuality that mends trauma, heightens inspiration and tightens connections—helping us wake up, grow up, and show up for a world that needs us all. This is a book about a big idea. And the idea is this: Slowly over the past few decades, and now suddenly, all at once, we’re suffering from a collapse in Meaning. Fundamentalism and nihilism are filling that vacuum, with consequences that affect us all. In a world that needs us at our best, diseases of despair, tribalism, and disaster fatigue are leaving us at our worst. It’s vital that we regain control of the stories we’re telling because they are shaping the future we’re creating. To do that, we have to remember our deepest inspiration, heal our pain and apathy, and connect to each other like never before. If we can do that, we’ve got a shot at solving the big problems we face. And if we can’t? Well, the dustbin of history has swallowed civilizations older and fancier than ours. This book is divided into three parts. The first, Choose Your Own Apocalypse, takes a look at our current Meaning Crisis--where we are today, why it’s so hard to make sense of the world, what might be coming next, and what to do about it. It also makes a case that many of our efforts to cope, whether anxiety and denial, or tribalism and identity politics, are likely making things worse. The middle section, The Alchemist Cookbook, applies the creative firm IDEO’s design thinking to the Meaning Crisis. This is where the book gets hands on--taking a look at the strongest evolutionary drivers that can bring about inspiration, healing, and connection. From breathing, to movement, sexuality, music, and substances--these are the everyday tools to help us wake up, grow up, and show up. AKA--how to blow yourself sky high with household materials. And the best part? They’re accessible, by anyone anywhere, no middleman required. Transcendence democratized. The final third of the book, Ethical Cult Building, focuses on the tricky nature of putting these kinds of experiences into gear and into culture—because, anytime in the past when we’ve figured out combinations of peak states and deep healing, we’ve almost always ended up with problematic culty communities. Playing with fire has left a lot of people burned. This section lays out a roadmap for sparking a thousand fires around the world--each one unique and tailored to the needs and values of its participants. Think of it as an open-source toolkit for building ethical culture. In Recapture the Rapture, we’re taking radical research out of the extremes and applying it to the mainstream--to the broader social problem of healing, believing, and belonging. It’s providing answers to the questions we face: how to replace blind faith with direct experience, how to move from broken to whole, and how to cure isolation with connection. Said even more plainly, it shows us how to revitalize our bodies, boost our creativity, rekindle our relationships, and answer once and for all the questions of why we are here and what do we do now? In a world that needs the best of us from the rest of us, this is a book that shows us how to get it done.

Culture swirls around us with a myriad of opinions, thoughts, and answers to our many problems - yet it noticeably fails to get to the root of any issues. Why? Our world tries to navigate life with a shocking ignorance of the true God of the Bible. This is true even in some of our churches. Consider this question: Is the God adored in your thoughts the same God revealed in the pages of Scripture? If God is the one who made us and this world, rethinking God according to his word is the correct starting place for restoring ourselves, our homes, our churches, and our nations. This is precisely what The Sermons of Behold Your God does. It has been edited for readability and put in convenient book form the original material behind the widely respected and successful Behold Your God group discussion series. This helpful book will stir up a desire in your heart to know the God of the Bible as never before. Whether you are looking for an evangelistic tool, a personal study help, or reading group material, this is an excellent resource. It also makes a great gift for a loved one who is beginning their journey of rediscovering the true God of the Bible.

Are you eager to ask the questions you've been told not to ask?Are you no longer satisfied with beliefs based on faith alone? Are you bold enough even to ask, "Is God real?"Most importantly, are you willing to follow where the questions lead? What is the book about? In Rethinking God, the Cosmos, and Other Little Things, Gary Bond invites the reader to join him on his journey from belief to skepticism. This journey ultimately led to Bond's renouncing Christianity and his embracing a life of apostasy as a "rethinker."When Bond began rethinking the foundational beliefs upon which his life was built, life could not have been more safe, secure, and comfortable. He found himself a model Baptist church member, leader of a men's ministry, Sunday school teacher, facilitator of seminars, author of a Christian book, and owner of a Christian bookstore. But nagging doubts would eventually lead Bond to end the religious charade and become honest with himself. A central question permeated Bond's rethinking: Does this make sense? This book explores questions not only about God, the Bible, and religion, but "other little things" as well, such as the Universe, the American government, human motivations, religion-less morality-and yes, sex.Who is this book for?If you are comfortable and happy and confident in your beliefs, then this book will probably not persuade you otherwise. However, if you have persistent doubts about your belief system, then this book can serve as a catalyst to begin your own "rethinking" of why you believe what you believe. Perhaps you may begin to realize that while beliefs often serve as illusion builders, disillusionment might provide a breakthrough to discovering reality. If you find yourself, as the author did, in any of the following circumstances, you may consider joining the journey: Burdened by a seeming lack of enough faith to accept what you're told by religious authorities Confused by the many interpretations of scripture and the resulting varying views and factions within the Christian community Fearful of expressing the inner doubt, Is God a delusion? and afraid to ask questions that would put you in the camps of agnosticism and atheism Not wanting to lose the respect and closeness of friends and family Scared that your doubts will doom you to an eternal hell Why should you read this book? This book will certainly have different effects on different readers. The author's experiences will not necessarily be your experiences. But there will be inevitable similarities, especially for those who question the Christian faith. Here are some possible benefits to reading Rethinking God, the Cosmos, and Other Little Things: To better understand how beliefs can ensnare the mind, build illusions, and leave no room for questions To bring to light the many inconsistencies within the Christian religion that most Christians choose to ignore To realize that religion does not have to be off-limits to the logic and reason that you apply to every other facet of life To learn the methods of becoming a rethinker Bond's desire is that through reading this book, you may also experience the power of free thought. Consider this book a traveling companion on a journey of doubt and questions. The journey is surely not always easy and may disrupt your life completely. But Bond encourages you to take comfort in the knowledge that many sojourners have come before you, and many are joining the journey now. You are not alone.

Why did God have to murder his only son to pay our debts? What kind of vengeful, violent God can only be satisfied by vicarious blood atonement? In Executing God, theologian Sharon Baker presents a biblically based and theologically sound critique of popular theories of the atonement. Concerned about the number of acts of violence performed in the name of God, Baker challenges cultural assumptions about the death of Jesus and its meaning to Christians. She ultimately offers a constructive alternate view of atonement based on God's forgiveness that opens up salvation to a wider group of people.
