This study aims to provide new insights into the connections between maritime history and global history. It demonstrates the significance of maritime activity as a conduit of global exchange by examining local, national, and international interdependencies and trade networks, and a broad range of time periods, geographical areas, and various sub-divisions of maritime historical research. It is composed of ten essays, with an introductory chapter and concluding chapter. The first five essays discuss the effects globalisation on shipping in the early modern period; the following three discuss maritime transportation and the economics of industrialisation from the nineteenth century to the present day; the next discusses the impact of global entrepreneurialism on maritime history; the penultimate discusses the connections and variables between maritime and global history; and the concluding chapter examines the theoretical assumptions surrounding the two disciplines, using the globalisation of Early Modern Spain as a case study to do so. The study demonstrates that the core strength of maritime history is its essential place in global history, and that the process of globalisation began at sea.

Seafarers were the first workers to inhabit a truly international labour market, a sector of industry which, throughout the early modern period, drove European economic and imperial expansion, technological and scientific development, and cultural and material exchanges around the world. This volume adopts a comparative perspective, presenting current research about maritime labourers across three centuries, in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, to understand how seafarers contributed to legal and economic transformation within Europe and across the world. Focusing on the three related themes of legal systems, labouring conditions, and imperial power, these essays explore the dynamic and reciprocal relationship between seafarers' individual and collective agency, and the social and economic frameworks which structured their lives.

The Handbook of Alternative Theories of Economic Development explores the theories and approaches which, over a prolonged period of time, have existed as viable alternatives to today’s mainstream and neo-classical tenets. With a total of 40 specially commissioned chapters, written by the foremost authorities in their respective fields, this volume represents a landmark in the field of economic development. It elucidates the richness of the alternative and sometimes misunderstood ideas which, in different historical contexts, have proved to be vital to the improvement of the human condition. The subject matter is approached from several complementary perspectives. From a historical angle, the Handbook charts the mercantilist and cameralist theories that emerged from the Renaissance and developed further during the Enlightenment. From a geographical angle, it includes chapters on African, Chinese, Indian, and Muslim approaches to economic development. Different schools are also explored and discussed including nineteenth century US development theory, Marxist, Schumpeterian, Latin American structuralism, regulation theory and world systems theories of development. In addition, the Handbook has chapters on important events and institutions including The League of Nations, The Havana Charter, and UNCTAD, as well as on particularly influential development economists. Contemporary topics such as the role of finance, feminism, the agrarian issue, and ecology and the environment are also covered in depth. This comprehensive Handbook offers an unrivalled review and analysis of alternative and heterodox theories of economic development. It should be read by all serious scholars, teachers and students of development studies, and indeed anyone interested in alternatives to development orthodoxy.

[English]: The volume focuses on the political and economic relations between the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily and the Dutch Republic in Eighteenth century. The starting point is the commercial treaty signed by the two States in 1753. Thanks to various Neapolitan and Dutch sources, the study reconstructs the political and commercial interests that underpinned the agreement, highlighting the importance of the relationships with Dutch Republic in Charles of Bourbon’s “politica dei trattati”. Through the analysis of the relations between a modest Mediterranean State and a mercantilist Power of the time (albeit in decline), the volume explores the Neapolitan “strategy” to find its own space amidst the clashes between the major commercial Powers of the period. By exanimating the impact of commercial treaty on the Dutch trades in Southern Italy, the book provides an initial approach to studying economic exchanges between the Dutch Republic and Naples. This lays the groundwork for a broader understanding of the relationships between Southern Italy and Northern Europe in the Eighteenth century, a topic on which much remains to be explored. / [English]: This volume addresses one of the most debated topics in the historiography of the Spanish Monarchy in the Early Modern Age: its political nature. It examines the most interesting aspects of the Hispanic polycentric model, which presents the Monarchy as a political entity composed of several interconnected units that not only interacted with the king, but also with each other. These connections contributed to the modulation of Court politics and the generation of new forms of collaboration, competition and negotiation. The analysis of four case studies, involving individuals, families and power groups that managed to move within or on the margins of institutional channels, between the Italian and Iberian territories of the Monarchy, allows us to interpret this political entity as something more than the simple juxtaposition of kingdoms under a single king. The result was a State capable of strengthening itself also through the interactions that took place between the local and global spheres thanks to the presence of an articulated system of networks.
