Como Antonio Berni, Diego Rivera y tantos otros artistas de su época, el pintor paulista retrató a hombres y mujeres anónimos de su pueblo; pintó sus mundos, sus paisajes y sus trabajos. Su obra pictórica y sus murales resultan centrales para comprender el itinerario de las vanguardias históricas de América Latina. Los trabajos reunidos en este libro fueron presentados en el seminario organizado por la Fundación Centro de Estudios Brasileros y el Proyecto Portinari en Buenos Aires en septiembre de 2004. En aquella ocasión se buscó reflexionar sobre el legado de un artista que supo expresar el espíritu de su pensamiento con ideas como: “La pintura que se desvincula del pueblo no es arte, sino pasatiempo”.
