O Movimento Modernista de 22, apesar de sua importância para o processo cultural brasileiro, não conseguiu, desde logo, penetração nas camadas mais populares, nem influenciar o ensino das artes, acadêmico por tradição. Em contrapartida, uma década depois, um grupo de modestos pintores-decoradores, sem proclamações estéticas retumbantes, logrou, prontamente, exercer um importante papel na revolução em curso das artes no país. Eram 'artistas proletários', como os chamava Mário de Andrade, filho de imigrante pobres, de origem italiana na maioria. Dedicavam-se à pintura com paixão e lutavam por ela como profissionais: abrindo uma brecha para os artistas plásticos modernos na Sociedade de Belas-Artes e um espaço nos Salões Oficiais (único meio de acesso ao público numa época carente em museus e galerias), chegaram a criar o Sindicato dos Artistas Plásticos, com a transformação daquela Sociedade. Este Sindicato foi a primeira entidade oficial a apoiar a arte moderna, portanto precursor legítimo de todos os Salões de Arte Moderna posteriores. Dos 'artistas proletários', mais tarde conhecidos como 'Grupo Santa Helena' somente Volpi teve a sua obra de há muito plenamente consagrada. Mário Zanini, seu amigo mais jovem, não conheceu o sucesso, vindo a falecer em extrema pobreza em 1971. Nas vésperas da Segunda Guerra Mundial e na década seguinte, Zanini desenvolveu uma obra importante, apoiada pela crítica, envolvendo-se posteriormente nas tensões geradas pelo conflito figuração-abstração, desencadeado pelas Bienais com a sua avalanche de novas propostas. Analisando as implicações destas tensões sobre o meio, este livro examina o clima sócio-político e artístico daquele momento e o drama íntimo do artista que, entre estímulos e críticas, viveu este período caótico e de crise profunda, cujos efeitos se fazem sentir até os nossos dias.
