Johann "Peter" Ruth was born ca. 1700 at Steinberg, Germany, the son of Johann Melchior and Maria Catharina Trein Ruth. Anna "Sophia" Lauer was born in 1703 at Hierstein, Germany, the daughter was Hans "Claus" and Maria "Margaretha" Wentz Lauer. Peter Ruth and Sophia Lauer were married in 1724 at Wolfersweiler, Germany. They had four sons, the first three born 1724-1728 at Walhausen, Germany. The family immigrated to America in 1733 and probably settled first in the Myerstown or Stouchsburg area of Berks County, Pennsylvania. After Sophia's death, he married 2) Catharin Mayer Meyer. They had ten children. He died in 1771 in Cumru Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Descendants of his oldest three sons lived in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and elsewhere.

Johann Ludwig was born ca. 1770 in the district of Koschmin, province Posen, Prussia, Germany. He was the grandfather and earliest known ancestor of Johann Andreas (Andres or Andrew) Ludwig. Andreas was born 1856 in Wielowies, Kreis Koschmin, province Posen, Prussia, Germany, to Friedrich and Christiane Ludwig. Andreas married Charlotte Reich, the daughter of Christian Reich, ca. 1858. They had 13 children. In 1892 Andreas, his wife and 6 of their children immigrated to Galveston, Texas. Five of their other children later immigrated with their families. Two of their children are believed to have died in Germany. Andreas died in 1912 in Washington County, Texas, and his wife Charlotte died in 1917. Descendants live in Texas, Missouri, Colorado, Oregon, and elsewhere.

ORIGIN OF THE NAME BARTHOLOMEW. Bartholomew is the English form of the Syriac name of the apostle Bartholmai, which is derived from Bar, the Syriac term, as Ben is the Hebrew, for son; see Psalms ii, 12, translated "Kim the Son;" and Tholmai or Talmai (the same in Hebrew) is often found in the Old Testament, see Numbers xiii, 22; Joshua xv, 14; 2 Samuel iii, 3 and Chronicles xiii, 37, as Talmai. Its signification is "furrowed" from a Hebrew root meaning "to furrow" or "cut." The process by which Bartholmai or Bartalmai in Hebrew becomes Bartholomew in English, is through the regular Greek and Latin forms Bartholonmeos and Bartholommus, the second o being an intercalation, thence possibly through the French. The Latin ae being treated as a simple ē, as in all the other Romance languages.
