Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Mainz, language: English, abstract: Reverse factoring is regarded as one of the most promising alternative financing solutions from which both SMEs in developing countries and MNCs can take advantage. With this method, potentially risky suppliers from the Third World can obtain low-interest working capital financing. Nevertheless, reverse factoring can also have some disadvantages in practice. The aim of this paper is to examine whether the use of reverse factoring helps Latin America based suppliers in terms of their development and business success. The further course of the study is organized as follows. The subsequent chapter provides a conceptual framework of reverse factoring. This includes a brief introduction to supply chain finance as well as accounts receivable purchase. Chapter three describes the current developments as well as the regulatory environment of reverse factoring in Latin America and gives some practical examples. After that, Chapter four discusses the benefits and constraints of reverse factoring. Finally, Chapter five provides a final conclusion and gives an answer to the main question of this paper.

Does 'reverse factoring' - a supply chain finance solution that has recently become popular in industry - allow for operational benefits? Are the benefits automatic, or do they need to be explicitly required in the reverse factoring arrangement? We explore these questions through a periodic review inventory model of a supplier (she) that serves demands of two corporate customers, A and B. The customers have the same payment term toward the supplier and the same minimum service level requirements, but customer A (he) can offer reverse factoring. The supplier chooses her base stock policy and internal cash retention policy in order to minimize her average total cost, while satisfying the customers' service level requirements. We use simulation-based optimization to determine the optimal policies and cost. Through numerical experimentation, we find that the supplier does not automatically offer a better service to customer A, but would rather collect any financial savings resulting from reverse factoring. These savings are however large enough that customer A can require a significant service level improvement. We find that the maximum improvement depends on the initial service level requirement, the demand uncertainty, the absolute difference between the supply lead time and the payment term, and the relative size of expected demand from customer A. Our work contributes to a better understanding of the operational dimensions of supply chain finance.

Reverse factoring is a financial instrument that large credit-worthy firms use to facilitate low cost financing to their suppliers by confirming future payment obligations to financial intermediaries. This paper studies the implications of reverse factoring on the buying firm's capital investment decision in the face of dead-weight costs for external financing. Our results show that the implementation of reverse factoring with payment terms extension can facilitate higher investment to the benefit of the integrated supply chain.

Factoring is a financial arrangement where the supplier sells accounts receivable to the factor against a premium, and receives cash for immediate working capital needs. Reverse factoring takes advantage of the retailer's payment guarantee and the credit rating differential between small supplier and large retailer, enabling the supplier to receive financing at a more favorable rate. We develop a supply chain theory of (recourse/non-recourse) factoring and reverse factoring showing when these post-shipment financing schemes should be adopted and who really benefits from the adoption. We find recourse factoring is preferred when the supplier's credit rating is relatively high, while non-recourse factoring is preferred within certain medium range of ratings. Both factoring schemes, if adopted, benefit both the supplier and the retailer, and thus the overall supply chain. Further, we find that reverse factoring may not be always preferred by suppliers compared to recourse and non-recourse factorings. Retailers should only offer reverse factoring to suppliers with low, but above a threshold, to medium credit ratings. The optimally designed reverse factoring program can always increase the retailer's profit, but it may leave the supplier indifferent to current factoring option when followed by an aggressive payment extension. More importantly, contrary to conventional wisdom, our theory implies that reverse factoring could be adopted even when the retailer has no credit rating advantage over the supplier, and could benefit the retailer even without extending payment terms.

"Factoring as means of finance is very ancient. There are also many books written about it. The factoring we see today can be considered the classical form of factoring or the vanilla type. Customers these days are very discerning and want more than the vanilla type of factoring. Since companies and banks offering Factoring struggle to go beyond this, an endeavour to solve the problem was the basis of writing this book. This book, divided into 3 parts, goes beyond the classical type of Factoring with a lot of examples and some live cases. It has pictures that are unique as it gives information on and traces our history on ancient monetary system. It is a must read for everyone and serves a reference point for Factoring."

"Around the world, factoring is a growing source of external financing for corporations and small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs). What is unique about factoring is that the credit provided by a lender is explicitly linked to the value of a supplier ' s accounts receivable and not the supplier ' s overall creditworthiness. Therefore, factoring allows high-risk suppliers to transfer their credit risk to their high-quality buyers. Factoring may be particularly useful in countries with weak judicial enforcement and imperfect records of upholding seniority claims because receivables are sold, rather than collateralized, and factored receivables are not part of the estate of a bankrupt SME. Empirical tests find that factoring is larger in countries with greater economic development and growth and developed credit information bureaus. In addition, the author finds that creditor rights are not related to factoring ... " -- Cover verso.

Following a definition and distinguishment of fine trading, factoring and reverse. Advantages and disadvantages are being explained as well. Finally, the influences on the balance sheet of the involved parties and on working capital are investigated. Ten years ago, from 2007 to 2011 the global financial and the euro crisis have caused a peak in bankruptcies of many companies and even states have experienced financial difficulties. Since 2011, the total number of companies’ bankruptcies declines. In 2016, there were 21,518 insolvencies of companies in Germany. In contrast to this, in 2010, at the peak of the crisis there were 32,687 insolvencies. Overall, most of the companies in Germany are small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). In 2014, they represented 99.3 percent of all companies in Germany. A proper working capital management is essential for all companies. Especially, SME are otherwise threatened to lack of liquidity or risk to become insolvent. Company funding has experienced profound changes lately. Basel I-III have extensively changed the regulatory circumstances for banks and their granting of credits. Banks must comply with changed regulatory capital and liquidity requirements as well as with new debt caps. This has a strong influence on company funding. Therefore, the rating of a firm and the risk of an investment will increase the price of the company funding. The changed importance of working capital management and the new regulatory requirements have altered companies’ financing possibilities and partners. Moreover, the financial crisis has revealed their dependency on certain bankrollers. Thus, other methods of financing suchlike factoring, fine trading, leasing and crowdfunding increased their importance. This paper examines fine trading and factoring regarding their differences, advantages, disadvantages and the methods’ influence on the balance sheet.
