Excerpt from Bishop Onderdonk's Trial: The Verdict Sustained at the Bar of Public Opinion; With Remarks on Laicus and Bishop Doane; By Spectator Thirdly. The circumstances of office time and place, _ under which the offences were committed, proved that the propensity, ccnfirlfnedj by indulgence, had become bold, outrageously reckless and profane. If the Bishop could do such things on his way to' an ordination, after coming from a confirmation, on the Sabbath day, during intervals of worship, on his Diocesan visitation's, in clergymen' s carriages, at clergymen' 8 houses, to clergymen' s wives, and to young communi cants of the Church - eu array of obstacles sufficient to check the most abandoned - it was hightime to arrestihis career of shame by. Pub-lie prosecution and punishment. On these three grounds we thinkthe Bishop was most' right? Eously condemned, viz. He was proved guilty of obscene acts repeat ed so often as to indicate a habit; and that habit of a' character of the 1 most scandalous obdu-racy. There was no room for faltering ln the verdict of condemnation. That verdict, sustained at the bar of pub lic opinion, can never be set aside by the injudicious appeals of sym pathizing friends. Far betterto submit in the spirit pf martyrdom, if need be, to the authority of the highest tribunal of the Church, than' to attempt to nullify its decisions, to' bring reproach upon the Epis copate, anto kindle anew the flames of an ecclesiastical warfare, whose monument threatens to be Ilium fuit. Let us, however, carefully examine the grounds of defence, set up by the Bishop? S friends. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Without Benefit Of Clergy written by Karin E. Gedge and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-11-06 with History categories.

The common view of the nineteenth-century pastoral relationship--found in both contemporary popular accounts and 20th-century scholarship--was that women and clergymen formed a natural alliance and enjoyed a particular influence over each other. In Without Benefit of Clergy, Karin Gedge tests this thesis by examining the pastoral relationship from the perspective of the minister, the female parishioner, and the larger culture. The question that troubled religious women seeking counsel, says Gedge, was: would their minister respect them, help them, honor them? Surprisingly, she finds, the answer was frequently negative. Gedge supports her conclusion with evidence from a wide range of previously untapped primary sources including pastoral manuals, seminary students' and pastors' journals, women's diaries and letters, pamphlets, sentimental and sensational novels, and The Scarlet Letter.
