This volume of essays investigates, across a wide range of texts and with an emphasis on the notion of conflict, the various forms, objects and modes of circulation that sustained the “European civilizing mission.” At the heart of this volume are two controversial and conflicting papers, authored by Robert JC Young and Bernard Porter, around which other researchers come together to complement the debate and address some of the thorny issues that arise from reviewing colonial and postcolonial conflicts. Under the aegis of history and cultural studies, as well as film studies, the contributors in this collection share the common purpose of reviewing imperial conflicts while arguing for their own research agendas. From opposition and conflict, new perspectives on those cultural processes, within the particular context of the British Empire, are gained.

Imperial Leather chronicles the dangerous liaisons between gender, race and class that shaped British imperialism and its bloody dismantling. Spanning the century between Victorian Britain and the current struggle for power in South Africa, the book takes up the complex relationships between race and sexuality, fetishism and money, gender and violence, domesticity and the imperial market, and the gendering of nationalism within the zones of imperial and anti-imperial power.

The Crimean War was fought far from its namesake peninsula in Ukraine. Until now, accounts of Britain's and France's naval campaigns against Czarist Russia in the Baltic, White Sea, and Pacific have remained fragmented, minimized, or thinly-referenced. This book considers each campaign from an imperial perspective extending from South America to Finland. Ultimately, this regionally-focused approach reveals that even the smallest Anglo-French naval campaigns in the remote White Sea had significant consequences in fields ranging from medical advances to international maritime law. Considering the perspectives of neutral powers including China, Japan, and Sweden-Norway, allows Rath to examine the Crimean conflict's impact on major historical events ranging from the 'opening' of Tokugawa Japan to Russia's annexation of large swaths of Chinese territory. Complete with customized maps and an extensive reference section, this will become essential reading for a varied audience.

“Monumental… [A] vast and detailed study that is surely the finest single-volume history of World War II. Richard Overy has given us a powerful reminder of the horror of war and the threat posed by dictators with dreams of empire.” – The Wall Street Journal A thought-provoking and original reassessment of World War II, from Britain’s leading military historian A New York Times bestseller Richard Overy sets out in Blood and Ruins to recast the way in which we view the Second World War and its origins and aftermath. As one of Britain’s most decorated and respected World War II historians, he argues that this was the “last imperial war,” with almost a century-long lead-up of global imperial expansion, which reached its peak in the territorial ambitions of Italy, Germany and Japan in the 1930s and early 1940s, before descending into the largest and costliest war in human history and the end, after 1945, of all territorial empires. Overy also argues for a more global perspective on the war, one that looks broader than the typical focus on military conflict between the Allied and Axis states. Above all, Overy explains the bitter cost for those involved in fighting, and the exceptional level of crime and atrocity that marked the war and its protracted aftermath—which extended far beyond 1945. Blood and Ruins is a masterpiece, a new and definitive look at the ultimate struggle over the future of the global order, which will compel us to view the war in novel and unfamiliar ways. Thought-provoking, original and challenging, Blood and Ruins sets out to understand the war anew.

Excerpt from The Empire Review, Vol. 15: February, 1908 The story of the British Indians in the Transvaal is a story of conflict between the Imperial Government, as trustees for the Empire of India, and the Local Government. Either our claim to hold India in trust is an impudent act of self-assertion, or it is, to adopt a phrase of Mr. Gladstone's, the highest trust and function that Providence has ever assigned to any family of the human race. The laws of the trust are written, as it were, on tables of stone, in the Proclamation of Queen Victoria of 1858, and declare, among other commandments, That no native of India shall, by reason only of his religion, place of birth, descent, colour, or any of them, be disabled from holding any place, office, or employment, under the Government. Since that time the policy of the Imperial Government has been controlled by the principle that accidents of birth or convictions of conscience which do not debar an Indian from equal rights in India should not debar him from equal rights in the constituent parts of the British Empire. It is getting to be more and more evident that the adjustment of this Imperial policy to the conflicting interests and exigencies of the constituent parts is the problem of the century. Excerpt from The Imperial and Asiatic Quarterly Review and Oriental and Colonial Record, Vol. 15: January-April, 1903 IN considering the important problems connected with these subjects, it is difficult, perhaps, to avoid ranging one's self with one or other Of the two great political parties in India, the British and the Indian, the former of which, though few in numbers, is mighty in power, while the latter, though numberless as grains Of the sea-sand, is politically wholly impotent. Our Unsustainable Life: Why We Can't Have Everything We Want With the concept of the Imperial Mode of Living, Brand and Wissen highlight the fact that capitalism implies uneven development as well as a constant and accelerating universalisation of a Western mode of production and living. The logic of liberal markets since the 19thCentury, and especially since World War II, has been inscribed into everyday practices that are usually unconsciously reproduced. The authors show that they are a main driver of the ecological crisis and economic and political instability. The Imperial Mode of Living implies that people's everyday practices, including individual and societal orientations, as well as identities, rely heavily on the unlimited appropriation of resources; a disproportionate claim on global and local ecosystems and sinks; and cheap labour from elsewhere. This availability of commodities is largely organised through the world market, backed by military force and/or the asymmetric relations of forces as they have been inscribed in international institutions. Moreover, the Imperial Mode of Living implies asymmetrical social relations along class, gender and race within the respective countries. Here too, it is driven by the capitalist accumulation imperative, growth-oriented state policies and status consumption. The concrete production conditions of commodities are rendered invisible in the places where the commodities are consumed. The imperialist world order is normalized through the mode of production and living.

Excerpt from The Empire and the Century: A Series of Essays Imperial Problems and Possibilities by Various Writers IF there is any truth in Schiller's saying, Men rise by their higher purposes, ' it is as applicable to nations as to individuals. In no period in history has it fallen to the lot of mankind to Witness a greater Empire than the British Empire of to-day, and it follows as a logical conclusion that the administration of such an Empire must needs imply a heavy weight of responsibility. Are we conscious Of these responsibilities, and is the nation rising to meet them? Surely, on no occasion is the question Of its future more Vital, is, in fact, the duty of reflection and examination more in keeping With national rejoicing, than on the centenary Of the great naval battle Which determined the future Of the Empire and laid the foundations of modern Europe, To serious men Trafalgar should be considered in the light of a national sacrament. The lessons of the past are weighed, our vows for the future renewed. Re Jolcmg must be combined with national self-examina tion, and the conditions of our success in the past used as a guide to our conduct in the future.
