Este livro oferece um olhar original sobre o cinema brasileiro entre as décadas de 1990 e 2000, por meio de uma reflexão sobre a expressão "cinema da retomada". Comumente utilizada por críticos e pesquisadores para refletir sobre os desafios da recuperação do cinema nacional após o desmonte do governo Collor, a "retomada" apresenta-se, a princípio, como uma expressão neutra, sem um ideário estético estrito, expressando apenas a continuidade do ritmo de produção. No entanto, esta publicação procura demonstrar que, por trás dos princípios de diversidade e totalidade, essa expressão contribuiu para a formação de um ideário prescritivo, aderente às transformações da cultura, da economia e da sociedade brasileiras em meados dos anos 1990, por meio de reformas modernizadoras que inseriram o País aos rumos da aldeia global. Desse modo, se o "cinema da retomada" contribuiu para inverter o cenário de grave crise institucional do cinema brasileiro do início dos anos 1990, também acabou por produzir apagamentos, empurrando para as margens obras, autores e tendências que não se integravam plenamente aos seus preceitos implícitos.

A partir dos anos 2000, uma nova geração de realizadores transformou os rumos do cinema brasileiro do período. Começaram nas garagens, com filmes de baixíssimo orçamento, totalmente à margem dos sistemas oficiais de legitimação, mas, pouco a pouco, suas obras foram alcançando reconhecimento artístico no Brasil e no exterior, como símbolo de ousadia, criatividade e juventude. Entre eles, destacam-se coletivos como a Teia (MG), o Alumbramento (CE) e a Filmes de Plástico (MG), e cineastas como Adirley Queirós, Affonso Uchoa, Gabriel Mascaro, Marco Dutra e Juliana Rojas, Felipe Bragança e Marina Meliande, Petrus Cariry, Allan Ribeiro, entre outros. Fruto da pesquisa de doutorado de Marcelo Ikeda, o livro esquadrinha as origens e características dessa geração de cineastas. A tese do autor é que o reconhecimento dessa cena não se baseou apenas na qualidade artística dos filmes, mas foi estimulado por um conjunto de transformações no contexto do cinema brasileiro do período. Ikeda destaca três elementos principais: o papel das tecnologias digitais e seus processos colaborativos; o novo ecossistema da crítica cinematográfica na internet, que relacionava essas obras com as tendências emergentes da cinematografia mundial contemporânea; e, por fim, o surgimento de uma rede de festivais de cinema, que serviu como ponto de encontro entre agentes estratégicos e catalisador dos valores dessa nova cena. A pesquisa parte da seguinte pergunta: como uma geração de artistas consegue legitimação em seu meio? O livro examina os condicionantes históricos que permitiram que um conjunto de realizadores que começaram "nas garagens" pudesse se tornar reconhecido dentro do campo institucionalizado de legitimação do cinema brasileiro contemporâneo.
