Missed Opportunities: Rethinking Catholic Tradition opens up a dialogue between the official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and the challenges the contemporary world presents to that institutions tradition of moral doctrines. It grounds this dialogue on a re-examination of the foundational issues of church reform and the many ways that the church teaches. Then Missed Opportunities turns its attention to a sequence of complex issues. Resting his analysis upon research and a half-centurys experience with the educational programs of the Roman Catholic Church, Gabriel Moran, a retired professor of educational philosophy, sets the groundwork and then examines a variety of connected issues, including birth and death, abortion, the natural world, suffering and pain, nonviolence, grief and mourning, issues of human sexuality, responsibility, environmentalism, and religious education. Missed Opportunities: Rethinking Catholic Tradition guides readers through the depths of the societal challenges facing the Roman Catholic Church. By looking carefully at the nature of Catholic tradition and reconsidering how to bring that tradition into conversation with contemporary issues, Missed Opportunities proposes a pathway for the church to follow to undergo an honest and thorough reform, to regain its credibility in the midst of a society grown dubious, and to speak to todays issues in a voice consonant with the best resources in the Catholic tradition.

Cultural Sustainability In Rural Communities written by Catherine Driscoll and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-06 with Social Science categories.

There has been a recent expansion of interest in cultural approaches to rural communities and to the economic and social situation of rurality more broadly. This interest has been particularly prominent in Australia in recent years, spurring the emergence of an interdisciplinary field called 'rural cultural studies'. This collection is framed by a large interdisciplinary research project that is part of that emergence, particularly focused on what the idea of 'cultural sustainability' might mean for understanding experiences of growth, decline, change and heritage in small Australian country towns. However, it extends beyond the initial parameters of that research, bringing together a range of senior and emerging Australian researchers who offer diverse approaches to rural culture. The essays collected here explore the diverse forms that rural cultural studies might take and how these intersect with other disciplinary approaches, offering a uniquely diverse but also careful account of life in country Australia. Yet, in its emphasis on the simultaneous specificity and cross-cultural recognisability of rural communities, this book also outlines a field of inquiry and a set of critical strategies that are more broadly applicable to thinking about the "rural" in the early twenty-first century. This book will be valuable reading for students and academics of Geography, History, Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, Anthropology and Sociology, introducing rural cultural studies as a new dynamic and integrative discipline.

From Occupy, to the Indignados and the Arab Spring, the uprisings that marked the last decade ignited a re-emergence of participatory democracy as a political ideal within organizations. This pioneering book introduces cybernetic thinking to politics and organizational studies to explore the continuing development of this radical idea. With a focus on communication and how alternative social media platforms present new challenges and opportunities for radical organising, it sheds new light on the concepts of self-organization, consensus decision making, individual autonomy and collective identity. Revolutionising the way in which anarchist activists and theorists think about organizations, this unprecedented investigation makes a major contribution to the larger discussion of direct democracy.

The first edition of The Growth Experiment, originally published in 1990 as a response to critics of the Reagan-era tax cuts, became a kind of bible for proponents of supply-side economics. This new and updated edition, which explores the economic effects of America's tax policy over the last five presidential administrations, makes a bold and timely argument against the centerpiece of Obama's economic policy -- increasing taxes on the wealthy. Lawrence Lindsey provides a data-rich argument showing that because of changes in human behavior prompted by tax cuts, lowering taxes on the wealthy "costs" the treasury far less than most economists calculate and creates an economic boon to middle and lower income earners. Sure to be controversial, The Growth Experiment Revisited is essential reading for anyone looking to understand the arguments at the heart of this most fractious of American policy debates.

Engaging With Ethics In International Criminological Research written by Michael Adorjan and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-10 with Social Science categories.

Despite a voluminous literature detailing the procedures of research ethics boards and institutional ethical review processes, there are few texts that explore the realpolitik of conducting criminal research in practice. This book explores the unique lived experiences of scholars engaging with ethics during their criminological research, and focuses on the ethical dilemmas that researchers encounter both in the field and while writing up results for publication. Who benefits from criminological research? What are the roles and impacts of ethics review boards? How do methodological and theoretical decisions factor in to questions of ethical conduct and research ethics governance? This book is divided into four parts: Part I, Institutional arrangements and positionality, explores the ongoing and expanding process of ethics protocol and procedures, principles of confidentiality, and the positionality of the researcher. Part II, Trust and research with vulnerable populations, examines the complexity of work involving prisoners, indigenous peoples and victims of extreme violence, power dynamics between researchers and participants, and the challenges of informed consent. Part III, Research on and with police, reflects on the importance of transparent relations with police, best practices, and the consequences of undertaking research in authoritarian contexts. Part IV, Emerging areas, scrutinizes the ethics of carceral tours and suggests possible alternatives, and offers one of the first sociological and criminological examinations of dark net cryptomarkets. Drawing upon the experiences of international experts, this book aims to provoke further reflection on and discussion of ethics in practice. This book is ideal for students undertaking courses on research methods in criminology, as well as a key resource for criminology researchers around the world.
