Language is a major part of identity in any context, but especially in situations of disenfranchisement and marginalization, in which heritage languages are often subject to repression and resultant shift and loss. One such case of potential loss of linguistic and cultural identity involves the Amazigh language groups in Morocco (and the other Maghreb countries), in the face of past Arabicization efforts in North Africa, the continuing influence of French from the colonial period, and the spread of English as a world language. In this study, I report on the results of a survey that elicited Moroccans’ views regarding the current linguistic landscape of their country, and their predictions for the future. The survey was conducted with two groups, teachers of English in Morocco and members of the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture or Institut royale de la culture amazighe (IRCAM), a product of the recent and controversial government support for Amazigh identity and issues. Qualitative analysis of the survey open-ended response questions suggests that both of these groups believe the linguistic landscape of Morocco will remain largely the same, but with a stronger presence of English. While the scale of positive change in Amazigh’s revitalization is slower than hoped for, I conclude tentatively that the issue is entering public consciousness on a broad scale, paving the way for larger scale societal change in favor of Amazigh.

The great diversity of ethnicities and languages in Africa encourages a vision of Africa as a fragmented continent, with language maps only perpetuating this vision by drawing discrete language groups. In reality, however, most people can communicate with most others within and across linguistic boundaries, even if not in languages taught or learned in schools. Many disciplines have looked carefully at language movement and change on the continent, but their lack of interaction has prevented the emergence of a cohesive picture of African languages. Tracing Language Movement in Africa gathers eighteen scholars together to offer a truly multidisciplinary representation of language in Africa, combining insights from history, archaeology, religion, linguistics, political science, and philosophy. The resulting volume illuminates commonalities and distinctions in these disciplines' understanding of language change and movement in Africa. The volume is empirical -- aiming to represent language more accurately on the continent -- as well as theoretical. It identifies the theories that each discipline uses to make sense of language movement in Africa in plain terms and highlights the themes that cut across all disciplines: how scholars use data, understand boundaries, represent change, and conceptualize power. Multilingualism is a typical aspect of everyday life for most of the world’s population; it has existed since the beginning of humanity and among individuals of all backgrounds. Nonetheless, it has often been treated as a variant of bilingualism or as a phenomenon unique to individual areas of study. The purpose of this book is to review current knowledge about the acquisition, use and loss of multiple languages using a multidisciplinary perspective, highlighting the common themes and stimulating insights that can emerge when multilingualism is viewed from different but related areas of investigation.
