Revolución Libertadora or the Liberating Revolution is the name by which the military dictatorship that ruled Argentina is known after overthrowing the constitutional president, Juan Domingo Perón, closing the National Congress, deposing the members of the Supreme Court, the provincial and municipal authorities and university and commissioning the entire Judicial Power through a coup that began on September 16 1955 and that, after more than two years, transferred the government to President-elect Arturo Frondizi, on May 1 1958, who would be overthrown in 1962. The preparations for the coup of September 1955 were intense and very careful, since the plotters did not want to repeat the mistakes made in the events of June. For this coup, the collaboration of several important army units was finally obtained, in addition to the Navy and the Air Force. Revolución Libertadora Volume 2 details the warlike actions of both sides day by day, along with the eventual resignation, exile and return of President Perón. The text is supported by an extensive number of rare images, tables and specially-commissioned color artwork.

Argentina's recently established democracy endured the trauma of four major military uprisings between 1987 and 1990, continuing even after the rebels' original motivations faded. Exploring the causes of the rebellions and the rebel movement's development, Deborah L. Norden's Military Rebellion in Argentina underlines the inherently undefined nature of new democracies and reveals important dimensions of how coalitions are formed within the armed forces. By focusing on a military movement rather than merely separate incidents of insurrection, this study reveals central motivations that could be otherwise overlooked. Norden begins with an analysis of the relation between democracy and military insurrection in previous postauthoritarian civilian periods, then turns to Argentina's long battle against military intervention in politics. The study focuses on the internally divisive effects of the 1976-1983 military regime, which generated the intra-army cleavages that emerged during the subsequent period of civilian rule, and the civilian policies that prompted the rebels to action. At the heart of the study is an examination of the evolution of military rebellion, looking at the shift from policy-provoked reaction to more independent, politically motivated organization. Norden also explores general themes such as intransigent interventionism and the effects of different military regimes in South America on the likelihood of democratic consolidation. Deborah L. Norden is an assistant professor of government at Colby College. Her articles on Latin America have appeared in numerous journals.

In 1955, Argentina was divided onto those in favour and those against the government of Juan D. Perón. His policies in the preceding years, against his opponents, and a deteriorating economy lead to an attempt to overthrow him on 16 June 1955 in a bloody rebellion which included the only heavy bombing in history of a Latin American city. Aircraft from the Navy and the Air Force bombed the Casa Rosada and other buildings, in an attempt to kill Perón and support the advance of a Marine force from the Navy Headquarters, just 150 meters from the Casa Rosada. The failure to gain the support of compromised Army units and the heavy resistance faced by the Marines ended with the rebellion by sunset.This failed attempt was followed by a successful one three months later, which ended the government of Peron after some days of heavy fighting. Starting on 16 September, units of the three armed forces initiated a rebellion, now in different parts of the country and with greater support. Heavy fighting followed, with bombing missions by the Air Force and Naval Aviation, including Avro Lincolns, while the Navy ships bombarded the city of Mar del Plata and blockaded the Rio de la Plata. Ground combat took place in some of the main cities of the country, though on this occasion Buenos Aires avoided the fighting. After six days, the rebels had won and Peron was exiled to Paraguay.
