Die Revolution von 1918/19 gehört zu den am intensivsten erforschten Themen der deutschen Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert. Entsprechend ist die dieser Revolution zugeschriebene Bedeutung in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten extremen Veränderungen unterworfen gewesen. Als Dolchstoß in den Rücken des Heeres wurde sie für die Niederlage im Krieg verantwortlich gemacht. Als ihr wichtigstes Ergebnis blieb die Rettung Deutschlands vor dem Bolschewismus lange unerwähnt. Daneben galt sie auch als halbherzige Revolution und wurde als verpasste Chance einer Demokratisierung charakterisiert. Erstmals dokumentiert die vorliegende Studie die deutsche Geschichtsschreibung über die Revolution von 1918/19 über einen Zeitraum von fast 100 Jahren. Sie beschreibt die Veränderungen unseres Bildes von dieser Revolution und geht der Frage nach, von welchen Faktoren die jeweilige Interpretation und Zuschreibung abhängig war. Der Autor untersucht in diesem Zusammenhang auch die Rolle geschichtspolitischer Initiativen und aktueller politischer Entwicklungen.
