Die Revolution von 1918/19 gehört zu den am intensivsten erforschten Themen der deutschen Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert. The German Revolution of November 1918 is nowadays largely forgotten outside Germany. It is generally regarded as a failure even by those who have heard of it, a missed opportunity which paved the way for the rise of the Nazis and the catastrophe to come. Der Aufstand beginnt bei der deutschen Hochseeflotte, als Matrosen sich weigern, trotz der bereits feststehenden Kriegsniederlage zu einem letzten Gefecht gegen die britische Royal Navy auszulaufen. Er verbreitet sich in wenigen Tagen über das ganze Deutsche Reich und erreicht am 9. November 1918 Berlin. Hunderttausende Arbeiter demonstrieren, die Garnisonen schließen sich an, der Reichskanzler gibt die Abdankung des Kaisers bekannt, die Monarchie bricht zusammen, die Republik wird ausgerufen. Ziel der Revolutionsbewegung ist nicht die Diktatur des Proletariats. Sie will den preußischen Militarismus und die Reste des Kaiserreichs in Verwaltung, Justiz, Schulen und Universitäten beseitigen und eine von Grund auf demokratische Gesellschaft schaffen. Die Angst vor einer bolschewistischen Weltrevolution verhindert schließlich, dass der vorhandene Spielraum zu einer wirklichen Entmachtung der etablierten Kräfte genutzt wird, aber die erste Demokratie in Deutschland ist erfolgreich installiert. Wolfgang Niess schildert so lebendig wie sachkundig die friedliche und erfolgreiche Revolution, der wir die erste deutsche Republik verdanken. Zudem macht er deutlich, warum sie bis heute weitgehend verkannt, instrumentalisiert oder vergessen wurde. Die Zeit ist reif, sie als größte Massenbewegung in der deutschen Geschichte zu würdigen.
