Excerpt from Revolutionary Socialism: A Study in Socialist Reconstruction The collapse of the dominant moderate Socialism was not a collapse of fundamental Socialism; it was a collapse simply of the contemporary historical expres sion of Socialism, and Socialism itself provides all the materials for the criticism of this collapse and for the reconstruction of Socialism. Excerpt from Terrorism and Communism: A Contribution to the Natural, History of Revolution The course of recent events did not minister to the uniformity of this work. It was rendered more difficult by the fact that, as time went on, the examination of this subject shifted itself to some extent. My starting point represented the central problem of modern Socialism, the attitude of Social Democracy to B'olshevik methods. But since Bolshevism had, ofits own accord, referred to the Paris Commune of 1871 as being to some extent its precursor and its prototype, and as having received the sanction of Marx himself, and since the Commune is little known and understood by the present generation, I undertook to draw a parallel between the Commune and the Soviet Republic. In order to make the Commune comprehensible I had to refer to the Paris Commune, and afterwards to the French Revolution and its Reign of Terror. This gave me fresh means for another parallel to the Soviet Republic; hence an examination of the Commune led to an examination of Terrorism, its origin and its consequences. Thus there are two lines of thought which become merged in this book, the one occasionally leading away from the other. At first I felt this to be rather disturb ing, and even considered whether it would not be better to divide the work into two separate sections, the one representing the exposition of the Commune, the other a discussion of Terrorism. However, in regard to my starting point, the Soviet Republic is in such very close connection with these two events in history, that it seemed to me impossible to treat them separately. I hope therefore that, in spite of the difficulties inherent in the dual nature of this book, I shall have succeeded in preserving uniformity in the structure of the thoughts contained therein. However academic the reader may think many of my illustrations and expositions, they are all of the highest practical importance, especially at such a wildly fermented time as the present. This does not mean to say that I have adapted, as it were, the truth to the needs of the moment. Instead I have always sought, even in those sections where I was referring to a period long past, to treat only of that side of the subject which seemed calculated to throw light upon the chaos that surrounds us. Excerpt from Manifesto of the Communist Party The "Manifesto" was published as the platform of the "Communist League," a working men's association, first exclusively German, later an international, and under the political conditions of the Continent before 1848, unavoidably a secret society. At a Congress of the League, held in London in November, 1847, Marx and Engels were commissioned to prepare for publication a complete theoretical and practical party-program. Drawn up in German, in January, 1848, the manuscript was sent to the printer in London a few weeks before the French revolution of February 24th. A French translation was brought out in Paris, shortly before the insurrection of June, 1848. The first English translation, by Miss Helen Macfarlane, appeared in George Julian Harney's "Red Republication," London, 1850. A Danish and a Polish edition had also been published. The defeat of the Parisian insurrection of June, 1848 - the first great battle between Proletariat and Bourgeoisie - drove again into the background, for a time, the social and political aspirations of the European working class. Excerpt from Isms: A Review of Alien Isms, Revolutionary Communism and Their Active Sympathizers in the United States It is vitally important to keep in mind at all times the fact that The American Legion is not a law enforcement body. Our mission is an educational one. If is to acquaint the public with the growth of subversive activities, and to recommend the legal cure; to Show the public that Communism is attempting to undermine our govern ment; that it is reaching into the schools, the churches, agriculture, and, in fact, into every phase of American life. The compilation of this publication was placed under way during the year Frank N. Belgrano, Jr., served as National Commander of The American Legion and Ray Murphy served as Chairman of the National Americanism Commission. This revised edition comes inthe continuance of the battle which Harry W. Colmery, as our National Commander for the year 1936-1937 is waging. It is hoped that in this more permanent cover in which a large part of this edition will be bound, this volume may find profitable employment in the libraries of our high schools, colleges and communities of the Nation. Frank N. Belgrano was indeed militant and outspoken in his fight against un-american activities. Ray Murphy, during his year as Americanism Chairman and during his administration as National Commander, was equally as militant and as outspoken in his battle against these agents of destruction. It was these three outstand ing Legionnaires along with Stephen F. Chadwick, National American ism Chairman for 1936 and 1937, who inspired the office of the Na tional Americanism Commission with the determination to complete this book SO that all Americans might know something of the bor ing from within tactics used by the advocates of isms in America, and because of that knowledge, join with The American Legion in the battle to crush, for all time to come, every destructive alien ism in this our beloved Nation. Revolutions A Very Short Introduction written by Jack A. Goldstone and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023 with History categories.

"In the 20th and 21st century revolutions have become more urban, often less violent, but also more frequent and more transformative of the international order. Whether it is the revolutions against Communism in Eastern Europe and the USSR; the "color revolutions" across Asia, Europe and North Africa; or the religious revolutions in Iran, Afghanistan, and Syria; today's revolutions are quite different from those of the past. Modern theories of revolution have therefore replaced the older class-based theories with more varied, dynamic, and contingent models of social and political change. This new edition updates the history of revolutions, from Classical Greece and Rome to the Revolution of Dignity in the Ukraine, with attention to the changing types and outcomes of revolutionary struggles. It also presents the latest advances in the theory of revolutions, including the issues of revolutionary waves, revolutionary leadership, international influences, and the likelihood of revolutions to come. This volume provides a brief but comprehensive introduction to the nature of revolutions and their role in global history"--

Revolution Goes East written by Tatiana Linkhoeva and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-15 with Political Science categories.

Revolution Goes East is an intellectual history that applies a novel global perspective to the classic story of the rise of communism and the various reactions it provoked in Imperial Japan. Tatiana Linkhoeva demonstrates how contemporary discussions of the Russian Revolution, its containment, and the issue of imperialism played a fundamental role in shaping Japan's imperial society and state. In this bold approach, Linkhoeva explores attitudes toward the Soviet Union and the communist movement among the Japanese military and politicians, as well as interwar leftist and rightist intellectuals and activists. Her book draws on extensive research in both published and archival documents, including memoirs, newspaper and journal articles, political pamphlets, and Comintern archives. Revolution Goes East presents us with a compelling argument that the interwar Japanese Left replicated the Orientalist outlook of Marxism-Leninism in its relationship with the rest of Asia, and that this proved to be its undoing. Furthermore, Linkhoeva shows that Japanese imperial anticommunism was based on geopolitical interests for the stability of the empire rather than on fear of communist ideology. Thanks to generous funding from New York University and its participation in TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem), the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access (OA) volumes from Cornell Open (cornellpress.cornell.edu/cornell-open) and other repositories.

North Korea, despite a shattered economy and a populace suffering from widespread hunger, has outlived repeated forecasts of its imminent demise. Charles K. Armstrong contends that a major source of North Korea's strength and resiliency, as well as of its flaws and shortcomings, lies in the poorly understood origins of its system of government. He examines the genesis of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) both as an important yet rarely studied example of a communist state and as part of modern Korean history.North Korea is one of the last redoubts of "unreformed" Marxism-Leninism in the world. Yet it is not a Soviet satellite in the East European manner, nor is its government the result of a local revolution, as in Cuba and Vietnam. Instead, the DPRK represents a unique "indigenization" of Soviet Stalinism, Armstrong finds. The system that formed under the umbrella of the Soviet occupation quickly developed into a nationalist regime as programs initiated from above merged with distinctive local conditions. Armstrong's account is based on long-classified documents captured by U.S. forces during the Korean War. This enormous archive of over 1.6 million pages provides unprecedented insight into the making of the Pyongyang regime and fuels the author's argument that the North Korean state is likely to remain viable for some years to come.

“If you are curious and open to the life around you, if you are troubled as to why, how and by whom political power is held and used, if you sense there must be good intellectual reasons for your unease, if your curiosity and openness drive you toward wishing to act with others, to ‘do something,’ you already have much in common with the writers of the three essays in this book.” — Adrienne Rich With a preface by Adrienne Rich, Manifesto presents the radical vision of four famous young rebels: Marx and Engels’ Communist Manifesto, Rosa Luxemburg’s Reform or Revolution and Che Guevara’s Socialism and Humanity.
