Excerpt from Revue des Religions, 1892 Les purifications constituent pour les Hindous des pra tiques minutieuses. Toutes leurs maisons, sont et doivent être purifiées. C'est surtout l'ouvrage des femmes, qui le font principalement avec dela fiente de vache et l'herbe darba. Elles mettent sur le plancher une couche de fiente de vache délayée avec l'eau, en dessinant, avec cette subs tance, différentes figures, auxquelles est attaché un sens mystérieux. Elles tracent ensuite par dessus de larges raies blanches et rouges, et répandent, après, de l'herbe darba. Tous les gens, qui se piquent d'étre fidèles ehser vateurs des usages et des coutumes ou occupent une posi tion sociale, font, de la purification, un acte journalier, et frottent, tous les jours et dans toutes les occasions tant soit peu importantes, leurs maisons avec dela fiente de vache. Chaque matin, l'on voit des femmes tracer machinalement, sans en comprendre la signification, des figures plus ou moins grossières, sur les façades de leurs demeures, ou les portiques qui les précèdent. Cet emploi fréquent de la fiente de vache, s'il a l'inconvénient de blesser l'odorat européen, a l'avantage de détruire nombre d'insectes, et de combattre le mauvais effet produit par les émanations. Aussi, il est à remarquer que dans les villages où la puri fication des maisons avec de la fiente de vache a lieu ré guliérement, les maladies contagieuses s'y développent moins qu'ailleurs, et que cette coutume, qui nous semble bizarre, contribue beaucoup à la salubrité. Il ne faut donc pas s'étonner, si les Hindous y attachent tant d'importance et la considèrent comme un devoir des plus sacrés.
