Renan avait eu dans ce travail pour colla borateur Adolphe Neubauer; mais ce n'a pas été une sinécure pour Renan que d'avoir à blanchir le manuscrit de ce savant, qui était très distingué, mais qui écrivait un français indésirable. Le Prix Judaïca - Adolphe Neuman 2008 de l'Université de Genève a été attribué à cette étude. La population juive d'Europe est traditionnellement considérée comme plutôt urbaine. A l'aube du XIXe siècle, la distribution spatiale de cette minorité est encore singulière, caractérisée par une dispersion dans de petites et moyennes localités urbaines ou semi-rurales et une forte présence à l'Est du continent. Dans la seconde moitié du siècle sa convergence vers les grandes villes s'accélère et dépasse progressivement la tendance générale. Cette étude vise à comprendre et à mesurer l'ampleur de ce processus à l'heure de la grande croissance des villes. Vers quelles villes la population juive va-t-elle se regrouper en particulier ? La répartition spatiale de cette minorité va-t-elle se conformer à l'armature urbaine des différents pays ? Quelles singularités vont subsister au XXe siècle ? Des données reflétant l'évolution de la population juive de 816 localités avant la Shoah ont été rassemblées pour cette recherche ; elles figurent dans l'annexe du livre. La synthèse des résultats obtenus pour la période 1750 à 1930 offre une vue globale de l'urbanisation de cette minorité. L'analyse des données permet notamment d'envisager le partage de l'Europe en trois grandes régions ; chaque « Europe » ayant ses caractéristiques et modalités d'urbanisation propres.
