Excerpt from Revue Militaire des Armees Etrangeres, Vol. 65: Redigee a l'Etat-Major de l'Armee, 2e Bureau (Ancienne Revue Militaire de l'Etranger); Xxxive Annee, Janvier-Juin 1905 Une solution se presentait tout naturellement l'es prit, c'etait d'employer a cet usage une piece de l'ar tillerie a pied que l'experience de plusieurs annees avait portee a un haut degre de perfection dans l'execution du tir plongeant. Des batteries de campagne furent donc armees avec l'obusier de 45 centimetres. Cette branche du service, absolument nouvelle pour l'artillerie a pied, donna a cette arme une impulsion puissante dans le sens de son emploi en campagne. L'efficacite des obusiers de 45 centimetres depasse toute attente; mais le poids eleve du materiel, pour l'emploi duquel on ne croyait pas pouvoir se dispenser des plates-formes, fit craindre que ces batteries ne pussent pas intervenir en temps opportun dans le combat. Ou voulut donc, au moins pou'r une partie des batteries a tir plongeant, obtenir une plus grande mobilite, qui ne pouvait etre realisee que par la reduction du calibre. Les experiences deja faites sur les canons de campagne, a ce dernier point de vue, ainsi qu'a celui de l'allongement du projectile et de la dimi nution du poids, profiterent au nouvel obusier de cam pagne dont le calibre put ainsi etre fixe a (l).
