Revision is often taken as a largely instrumental process which happens after the real work of writing is done – it is an unavoidable and tedious process. Refining by contrast is imaginative work, it requires craft, connoisseurship and courage, and builds knowledge about academic writing purposes and practices. Refining Your Academic Writing will help you complete your writing project and provides a reading, revising and rewriting repertoire that you can adapt and add to. It offers ways to think about revision and a basic tool kit which will help you to identify what needs your attention and why. This accessible book draws on and extends some of the most heavily used posts on Thomson’s popular academic writing blog Patter, as well as tried and tested writing workshops. Exercises and templates are grounded in research and theory on doctoral experience and academic writing. The wider context of academic writing is clearly explained, and the terms used to describe text refinement build understanding while challenging taken-for-granted assumptions about revision, editing and proof-reading. Written with a light touch, this book is ideal reading for doctoral and early career researchers, and provides strategies needed to support the writing revision process. The ‘Insider Guides to Success in Academia’ offers support and practical advice to doctoral students and early-career researchers. Covering the topics that really matter, but which often get overlooked, this indispensable series provides practical and realistic guidance to address many of the needs and challenges of trying to operate, and remain, in academia. These neat pocket guides fill specific and significant gaps in current literature. Each book offers insider perspectives on the often implicit rules of the game – the things you need to know but usually aren’t told by institutional postgraduate support, researcher development units, or supervisors – and will address a practical topic that is key to career progression. They are essential reading for doctoral students, early-career researchers, supervisors, mentors, or anyone looking to launch or maintain their career in academia.

“Like all writers, intellectuals need to say something new and say it well. But for intellectuals, unlike many other writers, what we have to say is bound up with the books we are reading . . . and the ideas of the people we are talking with.” What are the moves that an academic writer makes? How does writing as an intellectual change the way we work from sources? In Rewriting, Joseph Harris draws the college writing student away from static ideas of thesis, support, and structure, and toward a more mature and dynamic understanding. Harris wants college writers to think of intellectual writing as an adaptive and social activity, and he offers them a clear set of strategies—a set of moves—for participating in it. The second edition introduces remixing as an additional signature move and is updated with new attention to digital writing, which both extends and rethinks the ideas of earlier chapters.

Resolution of Equations in Algebraic Structures: Volume 2, Rewriting Techniques is a collection of papers dealing with the construction of canonical rewrite systems, constraint handling in logic programming, and completion algorithms for conditional rewriting systems. Papers discuss the Knuth-Bendix completion method which constructs a complete system for a given set of equations, including extensions of the method dealing with termination, unfailing completion, and associative-communicative completion. One paper examines the various practical techniques that can be used to extend Prolog as a constraint solver, particularly on techniques that solve boolean equations, imposing inequality, disequality, and finitary domain constraints on variables. Another paper presents a sufficient condition for confluence of conditional rewriting, and a practical unification algorithm modulo conditional rewriting through the notion of conditional narrowing. One paper analyzes the possibility of using completion for inductive proofs in the initial algebra of an equational variety without explicit induction. Another papers discusses solving systems of word equations in the free monoid and the free group, where a solution is defined as a word homomorphism. Programmers, mathematicians, students, and instructors involved in computer science and computer logic will find this collection valuable.

Rewriting Psychology written by David Y. F. Ho and has been published by Universal-Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-15 with Psychology categories.

Of what use is psychology if it does not help to solve the pressing problems of the day at the individual and collective levels? This is no less a pointed question to the reader as it is to the author that sets the stage for an adventurous sharing of ideas. The author shies away from providing ready-made answers but spares no effort in stirring the reader to ponder questions about human nature and behavior. Soon, the reader will react with the exclamation, “Ah, this book is about me, useful to my life!” In this way, the book serves to bridge the gap between academia and the general public. As the reader may well expect, bold assertions may be found throughout this volume. For instance, Piaget’s stage of formal operations does not represent the final or highest level of cognitive development; rather, dialectical thinking is the apex of human cognition. Viewpoints may be controversial, such as cautioning against importing Confucian education into America; the possibility that madness may enrich your life; raising the question if Trump is immoral, mentally deranged, or both. The present offering is at once audacious and provocative: Having raised the question about the abysmal status of psychology, the author feels compelled to take on the challenge of rewriting an academic discipline. The reader is invited to consider new visions for psychology’s future development, both scientific and practical. Fresh materials or distinctive features seldom found elsewhere are presented: the author’s “secret thoughts” and self-revelations; a discussion on the birth of evil and reinterpretation of the fall of humankind. All these expand the traditional boundaries of psychology and bring it closer to be a science relevant to the human condition.

Rewriting Success in Rhetoric and Composition Careers presents alternative narratives of what constitutes success in the field of rhetoric and composition from those who occupy traditionally undervalued positions in the academy (tribal college, community colleges, postdoctoral tracks), those who have used their PhDs outside of the academy (a law firm, a textbook publisher, a community center), and those who have engaged in professionalization opportunities not typical in the field (research center, a nonprofit humanities organization).
