The Hidden Italy is the first bilingual English edition of some of the best Italian dialect poetry written over the past two centuries. The selection of more than four hundred poems in Piedmontese, Venetian, Milanese, Romagnol, Roman, Neapolitan, Sicilian, and other dialects illustrates the impressive variety of Italy's literary and linguistic civilization. Italian dialect literature originated in the Renaissance, after Tuscan had won its preeminence as the officially sanctioned Italian literary language. Despite the official victory of Tuscan, however, many writers consciously preferred and chose their own regional or local dialects as their medium of literary expression. This departure from Tuscan became a particularly significant phenomenon in the 18th century and has continued up to the present day. Much of the poetry is characterized by its realistic portrayals of the lower classes, their suffering from social injustice and poverty, the simplicity of their approach to life, particularly to earthy, sensual experience. Many poets use or create a language that is mimetic, expressive, often unabashedly obscene and irreverent. The dialect becomes the language of pain and anger, of biting satire or political rebellion, of humor and meditation. It is also the language which reveals the spirit of Italy's diverse regional civilizations. Haller's literal prose translations and commentaries are aimed at leading the reader back to the original text. and its intrinsic flavor. Thus the book has appeal and importance both for poetry lovers in general and for people with a special interest in Italian linguistic and literary culture.

Carlo Linati (1878-1949) è stato uno scrittore italiano. Dopo un viaggio a Londra, Linati entra in contatto con la lingua e con la letteratura inglese, con cui instaurerà un legame per tutta la sua vita. Amico di James Joyce, con cui intrattenne una lunga corrispondenza epistolare, fu proprio l’autore irlandese a proporgli la traduzione di alcune sue opere.

A lungo dimenticato, frainteso, denigrato, ridotto a gaia macchietta o cantore di un Milanin perduto e rimpianto, solo da pochi decenni Porta viene collocato sullo scaffale dei gran lombardi insieme a Parini, Manzoni, Gadda, in nome di un binomio assurto a emblema: realismo e moralità. Ma davvero esiste uno spago in grado di legare insieme autori così distanti? Davvero esiste uno Stadtgeist che attraversa illeso epoche e generi? Per rispondere a queste domande Mauro Novelli ricostruisce i lineamenti del carattere milanese tradizionale, che Porta trasfigurò, facendone un formidabile combustibile delle sue storie. «Busecconi», «lupi lombardi», che tutto – onore, denari, affetti − pospongono alla soddisfazione del ventre. Sino all’Unità d’Italia il tratto peculiare dello stereotipo meneghino fu la ghiottoneria, oggi cancellata persino dal ricordo, sostituita dalla cordialità, che per secoli le fece da semplice scudiero. Una rimozione paradossale, mentre Milano si candida a spiegare come «nutrire il pianeta», in occasione dell’Expo 2015. Siamo al cospetto del pi. grande narratore in versi dell’Ottocento italiano. Divora il tuo cuore, Milano esplora le tecniche con cui sono costruiti i poemetti portiani, e illumina l’attitudine a dar voce a servi, ciabattini, prostitute, damazze, con effetti di sorprendente intensità, che percorrono e oltrepassano di slancio i territori del comico. Non «popolano di genio» ma scrittore di consumata perizia, Porta elaborò strategie narrative efficaci e originali, che subito ammaliarono il pubblico. Anche questo spiega le insofferenze che suscitò nella classe dirigente ambrosiana, e le censure che afflissero i suoi versi, inammissibili in quanto estranei alla celebrazione della serie Dio-patriapopolo-famiglia. Incline all’osceno, fustigatore del clero, attento alle ingiustizie sociali piuttosto che al nazionalismo, allergico alle mistificazioni populiste, Carlo Porta si tenne stretto ai valori del lavoro, alfiere di una nuova borghesia per la quale certo immaginava una parabola molto diversa da quella che la storia avrebbe disegnato.
