Cellulose is a natural abundant polymer used in a variety of applications. Its use however, is hampered by its poor solubility in various solvents. This is primarily due to the hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups on the anhydoglucose chain. In view of that, various cellulose derivatives have been synthesized to aid dissolution and this impacts a variety of solubility characteristics. Cellulose acetates (CA) are cellulose esters that are partially substituted at the C-2, 3 and 6-positions of the anhydroglucopyranose residue. Their solubility in various solvents depends on the degree of substitution (DS) of the acetyl groups. For instance, CA is soluble in water at low DS of between 0.5-1. But it is insoluble in aqueous solutions at higher degree of substitution (DS> 1). CA is employed in various applications such as textile manufacture, tool handles, specialty papers, cigarette filters and is a polymer of choice in majority of reverse osmosis membrane preparation. These applications often exploit semi- to concentrated cellulose acetate solutions in appropriate solvents. Such systems can be induced to form aggregated structures such as gels which can be initiated by the addition of a non-solvent. Thus, depending on the solvent and non-solvent adopted, the cellulose acetate mixed solvent system can be tailored to exhibit sol-gel characteristics utilizing the inherent intra- and intermolecular interactions present in solution. However, such systems and the interactions influencing their behavior is not very well understood. In this regard, the main objectives of our study are as follows -- to develop a ternary mixed solvent system comprising of cellulose acetate, N, N dimethylacetamide and water and manipulate the system to form aggregated structures leading to phase separated gel network. The tools employed in this project to investigate and characterized the macroscopic properties as well as the microstructural changes are rheology, scanning electron micro.

Phase morphology in multicomponent polymer-based systems represents the main physical characteristic that allows for control of the material design and implicitly the development of new plastics. Emphasizing properties of these promising new materials in both solution and solid phase, this book describes the preparation, processing, properties, and practical implications of advanced multiphase systems from macro to nanoscales. It covers a wide range of systems including copolymers, polymer blends, polymer composites, gels, interpenetrating polymers, and layered polymer/metal structures, describing aspects of polymer science, engineering, and technology. The book analyzes experimental and theoretical aspects regarding the thermal and electrical transport phenomena and magnetic properties of crucial importance in advanced technologies. It reviews the most recent advances concerning morphological, rheological, interfacial, physical, fire-resistant, thermophysical, and biomedical properties of multiphase polymer systems. Concomitantly the book deals with basic investigation techniques that are sensitive in elucidating the features of each phase. It also discusses the latest research trends that offer new solutions for advanced bio- and nanotechnologies. Introduces an overview of recent studies in the area of multiphase polymer systems, their micro- and nanostructural evolutions in advanced technologies, and provides future outlooks, new challenges and opportunities. Discusses multicomponent structures that offer enhanced physical, mechanical, thermal, electrical, magnetic, and optical properties adapted to current requirements of modern technologies. Covers a wide range of materials, such as composites, blends, alloys, gels and interpenetrating polymer networks. Presents new strategies for controlling the micro- and nanomorphology and the mechanical properties of multiphase polymeric materials. Describes different applications of multiphase polymeric materials in various fields, including automotive, aeronautics and space industry, displays, and medicine.

Cellulose Derivatives written by Thomas Heinze and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-12 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book summarizes recent progress in cellulose chemistry. The last 10 years have witnessed important developments, because sustainability is a major concern. Biodegradable cellulose derivatives, in particular esters and ethers, are employed on a large scale. The recent developments in cellulose chemistry include unconventional methods for the synthesis of derivatives, introduction of novel solvents, e.g. ionic liquids, novel approaches to regioselective derivatization of cellulose, preparation of nano-particles and nano-composites for specific applications. These new developments are discussed comprehensively. This book is aimed at researchers and professionals working on cellulose and its derivatives. It fills an important gap in teaching, because most organic chemistry textbooks concentrate on the relatively simple chemistry of mono- and disaccharides. The chemistry and, more importantly, the applications of cellulose are only concisely mentioned.

Cellulose is destined to play a major role in the emerging bioeconomy. Awareness of the environment and a depletion of fossil fuels are some of the driving forces for looking at forest biomaterials for an alternative source of energy, chemicals and materials. The importance of cellulose is widely recognized world-wide and as such the field of cellulose science is expanding exponentially. Cellulose, the most abundant biopolymer on earth, has unique properties which makes it an ideal starting point for transforming it into useful materials. To achieve this, a solid knowledge of cellulose is essential. As such this book on cellulose, the first in a series of three, is very timely. It deals with fundamental aspect of cellulose, giving the reader a good appreciation of the richness of cellulose properties. Book Cellulose - Fundamental Aspects is a good introduction to books Cellulose - Medical, Pharmaceutical and Electronic Applications and Cellulose - Biomass Conversion , in which applications of cellulose and its conversion to other materials are treated.
