Rhythm in Architecture is the first ever translation into English of a key early Modernist text, written by the celebrated Soviet Constructivist architect Moisei Ginzburg and first published in Russian as Ritm v Arkhitekture in 1923. Ginzburg is most famous for his Narkomfin Building in Moscow, completed in 1932, which he described as a "social-condenser": a radical experiment in communal living. While Ginzburg's second book Style and Epoch, published in 1924, is often seen as the manifesto for Russian Constructivism, Rhythm in Architecture--which preceded it--can be seen as his attempt to create a synthesis in thinking about architecture as a whole, seeking to show how "the true essence of all works of architecture" are "inspired by the laws of rhythm". Rhythm in Architecture is republished in cooperation with the Ginzburg Design Practice run by Moisei Ginzburg's grandson, Aleksey and his partner Natalia Shilova. It is the first of a planned series of reprints of Ginzburg's four books, Home, 1934 and Industrialising Housing Construction, 1937 as well as Style and Epoch, 1924--the only one previously available in English.

It proposes a novel critical reception of computational architecture based on the ability of digital design to move beyond mere instrumentality, and to engage with core aspects of the discipline: the generative engine of digital architecture reinvigorates a discourse of part-to-whole relationships through the lens of rhythmic affect. There is a paradigm shift in spatial perception due to the intense use of computational techniques and the capacity to morph massive amounts of data in spatial patterns; rhythm plays a pivotal role in the articulation of the topology of buildings, generating the atmospheric character that induces moods and throbbing sensations in space. The practice and study of architecture has often been informed by other arts, in particular this thesis focuses on what jazz music can bring to architecture. Historically, musical ideas have been seen to have both a formal and experiential analogy with built form. By investigating these past approaches that translate musical ideas into an architectural language, this thesis extrapolates the manner in which unique ideas of jazz and blues could be applied to architecture. Three main approaches of Jazz music - rhythm, proportions, and improvisation - are identified and studied. The construction of Jazz music is inherently linked to improvisation which arises from the operations of repetition, contrast, and variation. The thesis uses these approaches and operations to achieve formal, material, and experiential design solutions for a jazz school in Boston.
