RICARDO PALMA (1833 - 1919) fue un escritor peruano, erudito y bibliotecario. Su obra magna se llama ‘Tradiciones Peruanas’. Se desempeñó el papel de Director de la Biblioteca Nacional del Perú durante muchos años hasta su muerte en 1919. Palma se encargó de hacer la reconstrucción de la Biblioteca Nacional después de que fue saqueada por las fuerzas del ejército chileno en 1881. Palma alcanzó transformar la Biblioteca Nacional de pura ceniza en una de las bibliotecas principales de América del Sur. Por intermedio de su amistad personal con el entonces presidente chileno, Domingo Santa María, Palma logró recuperar unos 10,000 libros y también llegó a recuperar muchos más por su mismo esfuerzo personal. La reputación literaria de Palma se basa en la creación y desarrollo del género literario conocido como ‘tradiciones’ historias cortas que mezclan la historia y la ficción, escritas tanto para divertir como para educar. Sus ‘Tradiciones Peruanas,’ publicadas entre 1872 y 1910, cubren los eventos de varios siglos. La ficción histórica de Palma hasta el día de hoy entretiene y divierte a los lectores de todas las edades. Ricardo Palma aportó bastante a la literatura peruana y de América del Sur.
