Learning to Learn provides a much needed overview and international guide to the field of learning to learn from a multidisciplinary lifelong and lifewide perspective. This book draws on leading international contributors to provide a cutting-edge overview of current thinking on learning to learn research, policy, and implementation in both formal and informal learning environments. But what learning to learn is exactly, and what its constituting elements are, are much debated issues. These seem to be the crucial questions if assessment and development of this 'malleable side of intelligence' are to be accomplished. The approach of this volume is to consider a broad conception of learning to learn, not confined to only study strategies or metacognition, yet acknowledging the importance of such elements. The book sets out to answer five main questions: What is learning to learn? What are its functions and how do we assess it? What does it promise to the individual and society at large? How is it conceived in national curricula internationally? How can it be developed in a variety of contexts? The text is organized into two parts: the first addresses the core question of the nature of learning to learn from a theoretical and policy viewpoint, and the second presents recent research carried out in several educational systems, with special attention to assessment and curriculum. La ricerca presentata in questo volume ha come oggetto la misurazione degli effetti della mancanza di scuola per lunghi periodi, fenomeno definito, dalla ormai consolidata ricerca internazionale, come Summer Learning Loss. In particolare lo studio ha evidenziato che dopo l’estate si verifica un calo dei livelli di abilità linguistiche, ma non per tutti gli studenti e soprattutto non per tutti nella stessa misura. Gli studenti che “perdono” sono quelli con un background socio-economico e culturale disagiato e che non hanno vissuto esperienze significative durante l’estate. E se il gap è evidente dopo l’estate, continua ad ampliarsi anche dopo un anno scolastico, segno che la scuola non è in grado di controbilanciare le differenze tra gli studenti. Lo studio, che apre un nuovo filone di ricerca in Italia, spinge a riflettere sulla necessità di programmi estivi e attività didattiche mirate all’inizio del nuovo anno, con l’obiettivo di ridurre le distanze tra gli studenti che si registrano già dai primi giorni di scuola. La questione dei “disapprendimenti estivi” invita a riflettere anche sull’opportunità di modificare il calendario scolastico, con l’introduzione di più pause durante l’anno e la riduzione della lunga pausa estiva. La questione sollevata da questa indagine rimane aperta: riformulare il calendario scolasti-co o concentrarsi sul rientro a scuola a Settembre degli studenti?

Il libro Children’s Minds esce nel 1978. Con un linguaggio semplice, ma supportato da dati di ricerche condotte con rigore metodologico, Margaret Donaldson attacca molti luoghi comuni ispirati alle teorie di Piaget. Come sostiene l’autrice "Nello svolgimento di questo libro, io sostengo che oggi esistono prove che ci costringono a respingere certi aspetti della teoria di Jean Piaget sullo sviluppo intellettuale". Il libro fu quasi subito tradotto in italiano e pubblicato da EMME Edizioni, ma uscì dal commercio molto rapidamente e non fu ristampato. Su questo testo hanno lavorato molti ricercatori nei campi che vanno dalla psicologia cognitiva alla pedagogia alla didattica. Lo stile del libro e la sua scorrevolezza ne fanno in realtà una lettura adatta a un pubblico più vasto. In particolare sono molti gli stimoli e le indicazioni che un insegnante vi può trovare, anche se forse questo testo non ha influenzato tanto quanto avrebbe meritato i sistemi di convinzioni e le pratiche didattiche, almeno in Italia. Molti degli esempi discussi dalla Donaldson riguardano la costruzione dei primi significati matematici (la quantità, il coordinamento dei punti di vista, ecc.), o aspetti trasversali importanti per l’apprendimento della matematica, quali il ruolo del linguaggio e l’attività di soluzione di problemi. Per rendere più espliciti i riferimenti e le implicazioni per l’insegnamento della matematica il testo è accompagnato da una postfazione di Maria G. Bartolini Bussi e Rosetta Zan, che illustrano sia alcuni sviluppi successivi dei temi trattati che alcuni esempi di applicazioni a ricerche sperimentali in didattica della matematica.
